Why Do Men Get Man Boobs?

The official term for man boobs is – Gynecomastia. Otherwise known as gyno. 

Gyno occurs when a male’s hormones become imbalanced and estrogen (the female sex hormone) levels rise excessively.

As a result, breast tissue starts to form underneath the pectoral muscles, creating feminine-looking breasts.

Estrogen levels can become spiked for several different reasons. However there are 3 main causes:

  • High body fat

  • Puberty

Reason 1: High Body Fat 

When a man gains body fat, estrogen levels rise and testosterone levels fall. When a person reduces their body fat, aromatase activity decreases, meaning less testosterone gets converted to estrogen.

For optimal testosterone levels, aim for 15% body fat or under.

Although man boobs is actually pretty common, it’s rare to ever see a lean guy with gyno. This is because they’ll have less testosterone converting into estrogen.

How to Lose Fat Around Your Pecs

Unfortunately there’s no way to lose fat specifically from your man boob region.

What actually happens when you lose weight is you’ll burn fat proportionally from each body part.

However, if this wasn’t the case you’d have people walking around with skinny legs and fat bellys!

So in order to reduce fat around your pecs, your overall goal should be to lose weight.

Here’s a few tips to reduce your body fat %:

Eat in a small calorie deficit

Your body burns a set amount of calories every day at rest. This is known as your basil metabolic rate (aka your metabolism). To work out how many calories your body burns every day, use a BMR calculator.

Once you’ve got your total number, subtract 500 from it.

This is the number of calories you should eat every day to lose fat at a good rate (without losing muscle).

Increase your exercise

Lifting weights, running, swimming and cycling are all great ways to burn more calories and speed up your metabolism. This will increase the chance of you eating in a calorie deficit and burning fat.

If you can only do one type of exercise I strongly recommend weight lifting.

Lifting weights and performing chest exercises will help you build muscle and burn fat, helping you eliminate gyno.

  3. Cable crossovers
  4. Dips (leaning forward)
  5. Dumbbell flys
  6. Chest press
