Ostarine and Cardarine Stack: The Cutting Stack for Busy Lifters
Contents11 sections

You’ve tightened calories, but strength is slipping and your lungs burn halfway through intervals. You want to lose fat without watching hard-earned muscle fade. This is where some lifters look beyond coffee and willpower.

An Ostarine and Cardarine stack is built for a cut. Ostarine (MK-2866, enobosarm) is a SARM used to hold on to lean muscle in a calorie deficit. Cardarine (GW-501516) is a PPAR-delta agonist, not a SARM, used for fat burning and work capacity.

Both compounds have been tested in humans on their own, but no study has ever tested them together. Cardarine’s development was stopped after it caused cancers in rodents, both are banned in sport, and Ostarine lowers testosterone and HDL cholesterol. This guide covers what the research shows, the doses used in studies and commonly reported by users, the risks, and the bloodwork that goes with them.

Ostarine (MK-2866) and Cardarine (GW-501516) are research compounds that are not approved by the FDA or any other regulator for human use, and both are prohibited in competitive sport by WADA. Cardarine was abandoned during clinical development after causing cancers in long-term animal studies, and the two compounds have never been studied together. The information in this article is for educational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice or an endorsement of SARM or Cardarine use. Consult a qualified healthcare professional before using any research compound.

Key Takeaways

  • Ostarine is a SARM used to keep lean muscle in a calorie deficit; Cardarine is a PPAR-delta agonist, not a SARM, used for fat burning. No study has tested the two together.
  • In human trials, Ostarine at 1-3 mg a day added modest lean mass, and Cardarine at 2.5-10 mg a day raised HDL, lowered triglycerides and increased fat burning. Users commonly report much higher doses.
  • Cardarine’s development was stopped after long-term rodent studies found cancers in multiple organs. Whether that risk applies to people is unknown.
  • Ostarine lowers testosterone, SHBG and HDL cholesterol, and liver injury has been reported with SARMs. Bloodwork before the cycle and four to six weeks after it is the minimum.
  • Most of a cut still comes from the basics: high protein, heavy compound lifts, cardio after lifting and seven to nine hours of sleep.

Meet the Compounds

Meet The Compounds - Ostarine and Cardarine Stack

Here is a quick look at each compound before we talk cycles. Ostarine works on the androgen receptor to help preserve lean mass when calories drop. Cardarine activates PPAR-delta, which shifts muscle toward burning fat for fuel. That pairing of effects is why the two are sold as a cutting stack.

Ostarine (MK-2866): Lean Muscle and Testosterone Levels

Ostarine (enobosarm, also called MK-2866 or GTx-024) is a selective androgen receptor modulator. It binds the androgen receptor and was designed to act more on muscle and bone than on tissues such as the prostate. It was developed by GTx as a treatment for muscle wasting and is the most studied SARM in humans.

In a 12-week phase II trial in 120 healthy older men and postmenopausal women, 3 mg a day increased lean body mass by just over a kilogram compared with placebo and improved stair-climb power. A second phase II trial in cancer patients found lean-mass gains at 1 and 3 mg a day. Two larger phase III trials in lung-cancer patients did not meet their main goals, and Ostarine has never been approved.

Potential benefits:

  • Modest gains in lean mass in human trials at 1-3 mg a day, which is why lifters use it to protect muscle in a calorie deficit.
  • Better stair-climb power in older adults. This is a measure of physical function, not of gym performance.
  • Lifters commonly report better strength retention and recovery on a cut. This has not been studied.
  • Fits with the basics that do have strong evidence: high protein, creatine and heavy lifting.

Key considerations:

  • Lowers natural testosterone production and testosterone levels, along with SHBG. Suppression grows with dose and cycle length, and post cycle therapy may be needed.
  • Lowered HDL cholesterol in trials and has been linked to liver injury in case reports. Get your lipids and liver enzymes checked before and after a cycle.
  • Not for tested athletes. SARMs are prohibited by WADA in and out of competition.

Cardarine (GW-501516): Fat Oxidation and Endurance

Cardarine is a PPAR-delta (PPARδ) agonist. It switches on peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor delta, which turns up the genes muscle uses to burn fatty acids. It was developed by GlaxoSmithKline and Ligand as a treatment for abnormal blood lipids and metabolic disease. It does not act on the androgen receptor, so it is not a SARM, even though it is sold alongside them.

Small human trials lasting two to twelve weeks, at 2.5 to 10 mg a day, found higher HDL cholesterol, lower triglycerides and more fat burning in muscle. The endurance claims come from mice: in the best-known study, Cardarine improved running endurance mainly when it was combined with training. No human study has measured athletic performance.

Potential benefits:

  • More fat burning in muscle, shown in short human trials.
  • Higher HDL and lower triglycerides in people with poor lipid profiles.
  • Better endurance in trained mice. Lifters commonly report better conditioning, but there is no human performance data.
  • Fits a cut built on daily steps, zone 2 cardio and intervals.

Key considerations:

  • GlaxoSmithKline stopped developing Cardarine after long-term rodent studies found cancers in multiple organs, and WADA issued a rare public warning to athletes about it. The details are in our guide to Cardarine side effects and cancer risk.
  • Whether that cancer risk applies to people at lower doses or on short cycles is unknown, and no study can ethically find out.
  • Cardarine is banned in sport at all times.

Overview
  • Form: Oral Capsules
  • Researched Dosage: 10 mg to 20 mg daily (1-2 capsules)
  • Typical Cycle: 6-8 weeks
  • Cost: $69.95
  • Stacking Options: LGD-4033, MK-677, Ostarine (MK-2866)
Pros
  • Human studies from its time as a drug candidate found higher HDL (“good”) cholesterol and lower triglycerides. This is why it was first studied for heart disease risk.
  • Long half-life of about 16-24 hours means one capsule a day is usually enough to keep steady levels.
  • Pre-dosed capsules remove the measuring step, so they’re easy to take consistently and to travel with.
Cons
  • Animal studies found it caused cancer at multiple sites, and no one knows whether a safe human dose exists over the long term.
  • Can be detected in drug tests long after the last dose, and WADA has warned athletes about it specifically.

Stack logic: Ostarine is there to protect muscle, Cardarine to push fat burning and conditioning. Doses, timing and post cycle therapy are covered below.

Why Stack Them: The Case for a Cutting Stack

A cut works best when you protect lean muscle and keep training output high while you lose fat. The idea behind this stack is that each compound covers one side of that.

How the Stack Is Supposed to Work

  • Ostarine activates the androgen receptor in muscle and bone, which supports protein synthesis when calories are low.
  • Cardarine activates PPAR-delta, which shifts muscle toward burning fatty acids rather than glucose.
  • The two work through separate pathways, which is why users combine them rather than pick one.

Why Lifters Like This Stack

  • It is simple to run: two oral compounds, once a day, over a short cycle that fits a busy schedule.
  • Users commonly report holding strength while scale weight drops, and better conditioning on cardio days.
  • Cardarine is not known to suppress testosterone, so it adds no hormonal suppression on top of Ostarine.

What the Evidence Does and Does Not Show

  • Ostarine trials show modest lean-mass gains in older adults and cancer patients, not in lean lifters in a calorie deficit.
  • Cardarine trials show better lipid markers and more fat burning over two to twelve weeks. The endurance data comes from mice.
  • No study has tested the two together, so any synergy rests on mechanism and user reports.

Cycle length, doses and post cycle therapy come next. The goal is a plan that keeps testosterone, lipids and liver markers on your radar the whole time.

Cycle Design: Dosing and PCT Basics for a Calorie Deficit

A clear plan, set before day one, matters more than the exact dose. Decide your cycle length, your bloodwork dates and your stop rules in advance.

How Long the Stack Is Usually Run

Most reported cycles run six to eight weeks during a calorie deficit. Longer runs deepen testosterone suppression and give lipids and liver markers more time to drift. No cycle length has been shown to be safe for Cardarine, whose cancer findings came from long-term animal dosing. Book your bloodwork before you start, and plan a training deload around the end of the cycle.

Doses Used in Studies and Commonly Reported Doses

The doses lifters report are well above those tested in human trials. The table below separates the two. It describes what was studied and what is reported, not a recommendation.

CompoundDoses used in human studiesCommonly reported dosesReported cycle lengthMain concern
Ostarine (MK-2866)1-3 mg a day for 12-16 weeks (muscle-wasting trials)10-25 mg a day6-8 weeksLower testosterone, SHBG and HDL; liver injury case reports
Cardarine (GW-501516)2.5-10 mg a day for 2-12 weeks (lipid trials)10-20 mg a day6-8 weeksCancers in multiple organs in long-term rodent studies

Users who stay at the low end usually do so because Ostarine’s effects on testosterone and HDL grow with dose. With Cardarine, a lower dose does not settle the open question about cancer risk. Our SARMs dosage chart compares studied doses across other compounds.

Timing and Training Day Tips

Ostarine is usually taken at the same time each day. Some users take Cardarine before conditioning work. Keep strength work first, and add cardio after lifting or on separate days. That order protects lean mass and still drives energy expenditure.

Track body weight, waist, and tape measurements of quads and arms. Log top sets, RPE and rest times. Watch resting heart rate and blood pressure, and note mood, sleep and hunger. These signals show whether recovery and conditioning are holding up in a real cut.

PCT and Recovery After the Cycle

Ostarine is one of the milder SARMs for suppression, but it is not free of it. Retest total and free testosterone, LH and FSH four to six weeks after your last dose. If levels have not recovered, or you have symptoms such as low libido, fatigue or low mood, the safest step is a doctor’s evaluation.

Commonly reported SARM PCT protocols use clomiphene (Clomid) or tamoxifen (Nolvadex) for three to four weeks. Our guide to PCT for SARMs covers timing and what the evidence shows. Cardarine does not change the PCT picture, because it is not known to suppress testosterone.

Advanced Add-Ons: Supplements Lifters Pair With the Stack

Keep add-ons minimal and targeted. None of these has been tested with Ostarine or Cardarine; they are listed for what they do on their own.

  • Fat-loss aids: caffeine before training, and green tea catechins, usually taken with caffeine. Some lean lifters add yohimbine, which can raise heart rate, blood pressure and anxiety, so skip it if any of those are an issue.
  • Recovery and sleep: creatine for strength, and glycine or magnesium glycinate before bed. Better sleep helps protect fat-free mass in a deficit.
  • Joint support: gelatin or collagen with vitamin C about an hour before short skipping or light plyometric sessions. In a small study, gelatin with vitamin C taken this way increased a marker of collagen synthesis.
  • Lipids: omega-3 fish oil lowers triglycerides, and berberine modestly lowers LDL and triglycerides. Neither reliably reverses the HDL drop from Ostarine, so stop the stack if your lipid panel worsens.

Where to Buy Ostarine and Cardarine

Ostarine and Cardarine are sold as research chemicals, not as approved drugs or supplements, so quality control is up to the seller. When researchers bought and tested products sold online as SARMs, a study in JAMA found many were mislabeled, with wrong amounts or ingredients that were not on the label.

If you buy for research, pick a supplier that publishes batch-matched, third-party certificates of analysis (COAs) with lot numbers. SwissChems publishes third-party COAs for its batches and is the source many of our readers use. A COA confirms identity and purity; it does not make a compound safe to take.

Risks, Side Effects, and Safety

Run short cycles and stay at the low end of reported doses. Get labs before you start and again after you finish.

Testosterone: Ostarine lowers testosterone and SHBG, more so at higher doses and on longer cycles. If bloodwork or symptoms confirm suppression, follow the PCT steps above and retest.

Lipids and liver: Ostarine lowers HDL cholesterol, and liver injury has been described in case reports of SARM use, Ostarine included. Cardarine moved lipids in a favourable direction in its trials, but there is no evidence that it offsets Ostarine’s effect on HDL, and the combination has not been studied. Track HDL, LDL, triglycerides and liver enzymes (ALT, AST, GGT), and stop the stack if the numbers worsen.

Cancer risk: Cardarine’s long-term rodent studies found tumours in multiple organs. That is animal data and the risk in people is unknown, but it is the reason the drug was abandoned and the reason WADA warned athletes about it.

Heart and blood pressure: The FDA has warned that SARMs may raise the risk of heart attack and stroke. Keep an eye on blood pressure and resting heart rate. If you have heart issues, skip this stack and talk to a doctor first.

Women: Ostarine has been studied in postmenopausal women at 3 mg a day, but there is no established safe dose for women using it to cut. Watch for signs of virilization such as a deeper voice, acne and unwanted hair growth, along with menstrual changes, and stop if they appear.

Don’t combine the stack with alcohol, heavy stimulants or steroids, especially on a first run. Stop and get medical care if you have chest pain, dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, crushing fatigue or severe headaches.

Minimum bloodwork: total and free testosterone, LH, FSH, SHBG, a full lipid panel, liver markers, fasting glucose, A1c and a CBC. Log blood pressure, heart rate and waist size throughout the run.

Legality, Testing, and Sourcing

Ostarine and Cardarine are on the WADA Prohibited List at all times, in and out of competition: Ostarine as an anabolic agent and Cardarine as a metabolic modulator. If you compete in a tested sport, don’t use them. Workplaces and the military may have their own rules, so check before you run a cycle.

Neither compound is approved for human use anywhere. They are sold as research chemicals, and the FDA has sent warning letters to companies selling SARMs in bodybuilding products. Laws on buying and owning them differ by country.

Buy only from research suppliers that publish third-party COAs, batch numbers and contamination screens. Look for HPLC purity, heavy-metal tests and microbial checks, and sealed, tamper-evident packaging.

The Bottom Line

An Ostarine and Cardarine stack pairs a muscle-sparing SARM with a fat-burning PPAR-delta agonist, but the combination has never been studied and both compounds carry real risks.

  • Ostarine has the most human data of any SARM, with modest lean-mass gains at 1-3 mg a day, but it still lowers testosterone and HDL cholesterol.
  • Cardarine improved lipids and fat burning in short human trials, but it was abandoned after causing cancers in rodents, and its cancer risk in people is unknown.
  • Users who run it anyway keep the cycle short and doses low, get bloodwork before and after, and stop when markers move the wrong way. Diet, training and sleep still do most of the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Cardarine (GW-501516) is a PPAR-delta agonist. It acts on genes that control fat metabolism, not on the androgen receptor, so it is not a SARM and is not known to suppress testosterone. It is sold alongside SARMs because lifters use it for cutting and conditioning.
Base the call on bloodwork. Ostarine is milder than most SARMs, but it lowers testosterone, more so at higher doses and on longer cycles. Retest four to six weeks after the cycle. If levels have not recovered or you have symptoms, see a doctor rather than guessing. Cardarine does not add to suppression.
Some women use Ostarine at low doses, but it has only been studied in postmenopausal women at 3 mg a day, and there is no established safe dose for women using it to cut. Virilizing effects are possible, and Cardarine’s cancer findings apply regardless of sex. Monitor closely and stop at the first unwanted effect.
Six to eight weeks is the most commonly reported length. Longer runs deepen testosterone suppression and lipid changes. No cycle length has been shown to be safe for Cardarine.
In long-term rodent studies, Cardarine caused cancers in multiple organs, which is why GlaxoSmithKline stopped developing it. The human trials were too short and too small to show cancer risk either way, so the risk in people is unknown.
Ostarine is sold only as a research chemical. If you buy it for research, use a supplier that publishes batch-matched third-party COAs; SwissChems is often chosen for its testing. Check your country’s laws first, and remember that a COA confirms purity, not safety.
