When it comes to building a massive and ripped physique, the combination of Anavar and Testosterone provides you with a potent combination of compounds! At the same time, it will take your strength gains through the roof.
If you’re considering taking an Anavar /Test stack, you’re in for some serious gains. However, you also need to be aware of the side effects.
In this article, I’ll cover everything you need to know to make an informed decision about your first Anavar / Testosterone cycle.
TL;DR Why Use Anavar and Test?
- Anavar and Test is one of the most famous cycles for beginners.
- This stack delivers some pretty impressive muscle and strength gains while also cutting bodyfat.
- It’s also one of the safest steroid stacks that you can take.
What is Testosterone?
Testosterone is the male sexual hormone, important for sexual function, the ability to grow body hair, masculiinity and libido. Natural testosterone gets converted into Estrogen and Dihydrogen Testosterone at a normal rate, however adding exogenous testosterone increases this conversion, thus if those two get too high we see side effects.
Types of Testosterone Steroids
The main types of testosterone are as follows:
|Type||Half Life||Injection Frequency||Benefits||Detection Period|
|Propionate (Prop)||108 Hours (4.5 Days)||Every Other Day||Stable Blood Levels||Up to 30 Days|
|Enanthate (E)||168 – 216 Hours (7 – 9 Days)||Once Per Week (Ideally more)||Less Injections||Up to 90 Days|
|Cypionate (Cyp)||192 – 240 Hours (8 – 10 Days)||Once Per Week (Ideally more)||Less Injections||Up to 90 Days|
|Sustanon (Sust)||360 – 432 Hours (15 – 18 Days)||Once Every 3 Weeks (Ideally More)||Much less Injections||Up to 90 Days|
The only difference between these are the difference in the Carbon Chain attached to them – Sustanon is a combination of different types of Testosterone.
Enanthate and Cypionate are sort of interchangeable, you could potentially switch between the two and have similar blood levels regardless.
How does Testosterone work?
Testosterone binds to the androgen receptors in the body, which in turn binds to the DNA. This can cause muscle growth, fat loss, and some other minor effects like creatine synthesis and glycogen synthesis.
Testosterone is the main anabolic hormone in the body. Taking synthetic testosterone in conjunction with resistance training will result in the following:
- Increased muscular growth
- Increased fat loss (slight)
- Increased libido
- Increased recovery
- Increased Protein Synthesis
Testosterone Side Effects
Administration of exogenous Testosterone that can lead to the following side effects:
- Testicular Shutdown
- Hair Loss
- Prostate Growth
- Cardiovascular Problems
- Aggression (very slight)
What is Anavar?
The scientific name of Anavar is Oxandrolone. This oral steroid is a Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) derivative hormone that has been structurally altered.
Since Anavar does not aromatize, it will not cause Estrogen to rise, and any gains you get from this steroid will be lean muscle tissue and not water weight.
Anavar helps to get you ripped by reducing thyroid-binding globulin and it also helps to promote clean, dry muscle gains.
The half-life of Anavar is only around 8 hours. For that reason, it should be dosed 1-2 times per day to maintain a constant supply in the bloodstream. However, if you’re running a dose 10mg or less, it might be best to just use one dosage. Splitting the dose in too little milligrams, you might not cross the anabolism threshold.
Anavar’s detection time is 3-4 weeks.
It is considered to be a mild steroid and it does not come with androgenic or estrogenic side effects.
However, it can cause crippling pumps, so I suggest supplementing with taurine while you are cycling with Anavar.
How Does Anavar Work?
Anavar is a modified form of the DHT hormone, which has used an oxygen atom to replace the 2-carbon and methylation in the 17 position.
This single alteration forces the body to treat DHT like testosterone. The result is an enhanced ability to gain muscle mass, increase strength levels and get stronger.
However, Anavar is not considered an especially potent bulking agent for male bodybuilders and it is far more popular as a cutting agent.
Women, however, can get substantial mass enhancement gains with Anavar.
Anavar has a number of benefits for the body. Let’s consider them in order of potency!
- Fat Loss: Extremely potent as a fat loss agent, combined with a fat loss lifestyle
- Strength Gain: DHTs are known to increase force production more so than pure Testosterone
- Muscle Gain: Not as effective as other drugs, but can still lead to muscle gain
Anavar Side Effects
Some of the major side effects of Anavar include:
- Increase in blood pressure
- Gynecomastia (to some)
- Liver damage

Using Testosterone with Anavar
If you’re a beginner or just someone wary of steroids’ dangerous side effects, an Anavar and Testosterone cycle is a sensible choice. Also if you want to build muscle (but not huge amounts), this could be an effective duo to take. There are better options available however.
You’d need to add a powerful steroid like Dianabol, Trenbolone or Anadrol into this cycle if your goal is to build a lot of size.
In conclusion, you’re likely to burn a considerable amount of fat on Anavar and Testosterone, build some muscle, enhance your muscle tone and increase vascularity.
Using Anavar for a very long time will have significant negative effects on your liver values and is not recommended.
Drawbacks of a Testosterone and Anavar Cycle
This cycle will mostly be used for cutting. You’ll more often than not you’ll see bodybuilders use this in the last few weeks before a show, or females looking to build muscle. Other side effects of this combination include:
Due to Testosterone and Anavar causing DHT levels to rise, you may experience some thinning of the hair on your scalp. How much thinning will depend on your genetics and how sensitive you are to anabolic steroids.
However, after your cycle, your hair is likely to thicken again once your hormones regulate back to normal.
If you’re anxious about losing any hair on Anavar/Testosterone – you can supplement with a DHT-blocking supplement such as Finasteride or Saw Palmetto. These block the conversion of Testosterone into DHT.
Or you can use a caffeine shampoo, which has proven to increase the lifespan of hair follicles on your scalp.
Increase in Blood Pressure
Anavar is a mild compound, thus it’s uncommon for users to notice any major side effects (when used in moderate doses for short periods of time).
Testosterone is a compound you have to be more careful when taking, as it can cause an increase in blood pressure. Moreover, just having more body mass (as a result of these drugs) will have a larger impact on Blood Pressure.
Here are a few recommendations that may help lower Blood Pressure:
- Increasing Water Intake and Reducing Sodium in your diet
- Losing weight
If you plan on taking Anavar/Testosterone, it’s important to get regular checkups with your doctor so they can monitor your BP.
There are also blood pressure kits you can buy online, enabling you to monitor your levels even more frequently.
Testosterone is a compound you have to be more careful when taking, as it will cause your cholesterol levels to shift in a negative way (LDL levels increasing).
Certain supplements can help lower your LDL cholesterol levels, or bring your blood pressure back down to normal.
Here are a few that may help:
- Omega Fatty Acids
- Psyllium Husk
There are some studies to show that Anavar will bring about a lowering of total Cholesterol levels, however in combination with Testosterone, blood lipids will still be out of range.
Gyno can happen on Testosterone, especially if you’re taking high doses or exceptionally long cycles (12+ weeks).
This is because of exogenous Testosterone that will convert into Estrogen via Aromatase. High estrogen levels are the culprit for the accumulation of breast tissue in males.
How likely you are to experience gyno will also depend on your genetic make-up i.e. how much Estrogen your body naturally produces. The more Estrogen you naturally have, the more likely you are to experience ‘man boobs’ whilst on anabolic steroids.
There are also reports of people experiencing Gyno, whilst taking Anavar. This can come as a surprise to users as Anavar decreases testosterone levels.
However, studies confirm Anavar may alter your hormones in a way that can cause estrogen dominance, as boys who were given oxandrolone had more incidences of gyno.
If you’re concerned about gyno, you can take Anti-Estrogens to reduce the likelihood of this occurring. Drugs like Aromasin, Arimidex and Letrozole will do fine.
Anavar is not particularly hepatotoxic and thus is unlikely to cause liver failure on its own. However, it can cause raised liver values if taking a high enough dose for extended periods of time.
Oral Testosterone however is toxic on the liver and long-term use can cause liver failure, especially if there isn’t adequate time in-between cycles for the liver to recover.
The liver is a very resilient organ, that actually can experience a lot of damage and still not fail.
However, if you want to reduce your chances of experiencing any liver problems from your cycle, consider the following:
- Eliminate (or cut down) alcohol consumption
- Milk thistle supplement
- Artichoke leaf supplement
If you’re using Testosterone and Anavar together to build muscle, you’ll be cutting yourself short by not adding any other bulking steroids to your stack.
Deca Durabolin or Primobolon would be worthy additions, which will take your muscle gains to another level.
However, if you’re a newbie and want to get ripped – an Anavar and Testosterone cycle will be an effective stack. This could also be a suitable beginner cycle, assuming you keep the dosing low-moderate.
If you’d like to burn even more fat and get more shredded, you could run Clenbuterol alongside Anavar and Testosterone.
Clen will enable you to burn more calories than usual, via the process of thermogenesis, turbocharging fat loss.
Clenbuterol won’t result in any mass/size gains in humans (it can in animals), thus it’s typically used when cutting and is commonly taken with Anavar. Clenbuterol is very commonly known as an anti-catabolic agent.
Don’t take Clenbuterol if you have any heart problems though as it’s known to significantly increase blood pressure due to additional adrenaline output.
SARMs (Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators) act similarly to Steroids in the manner that they bind to Androgen receptors and cause anabolism, fat loss and recovery. The difference comes in the selectiveness of the SARMs, hence the name. SARMs only bind to the Androgen receptors within muscles and bones, therefore not causing the typical Androgenic side effects we associate with Steroids.
This means that we typically do not see hair loss, Testosterone production shutdown, or Prostate growth.
SARM Alternative to Testosterone: Rad-140 Testolone
A decent alternative to Testosterone could be Rad 140, as it will result in similar physiological adaptations with fewer Androgenic side effects.
SARM Alternative to Anavar: Cardarine
