In this article, I’ll cover everything you need to know to make an informed decision about your first Anavar / Testosterone cycle.
TL;DR Why Use Anavar and Test?
- Anavar and Test is one of the most famous cycles for beginners.
- This stack delivers some pretty impressive muscle and strength gains while also cutting bodyfat.
- It’s also one of the safest steroid stacks that you can take.

Anavar and Testosterone
Testosterone is a bulking agent that is designed to add serious muscle mass to the body. In contrast, Anavar is a cutting steroid, intended to get you ripped.
The combination of these two compounds in a cycle will give you the best of both worlds.
As a result, you will end up with a lean, muscular physique.
What is Anavar?
The scientific name of Anavar is oxandrolone. This oral steroid is a dihydrotestosterone (DHT) hormone that has been structurally altered.
Since Anavar does not aromatize, any gains you get from this steroid will be lean muscle tissue and not water weight.
Anavar helps to get you ripped by reducing thyroid-binding globulin and it also helps to promote clean, dry muscle gains.
The half-life of Anavar is only around 8 hours. For that reason, it should be dosed 1-2 times per day to maintain a constant supply in the bloodstream.
Anavar’s detection time is 3-4 weeks.
It is considered to be a mild steroid and it does not come with androgenic or estrogenic side effects.
However, it can cause crippling pumps, so I suggest supplementing with taurine while you are cycling with Anavar.
How Does Anavar Work?
Anavar is a modified form of the DHT hormone, which has used an oxygen atom to replace the 2-carbon and methylation in the 17 position.
This single alteration forces the body to treat DHT like testosterone. The result is an enhanced ability to gain muscle mass, increase strength levels and get stronger.
However, Anavar is not considered an especially potent bulking agent for male bodybuilders and it is far more popular as a cutting agent.
Women, however, can get substantial mass enhancement gains with Anavar.
Men should begin with a daily dosage of 20 mg of Anavar. This can increase over the course of a 6-8 8 week cycle to 40 mg per day.
Women should begin with 10 mg and increase over the course of a cycle to 20 mg per day.
How Long to Cycle For?
Bodybuilders typically take 40-100mg of anavar a day, and 300-500mg of testosterone enanthate per week.
Testosterone is usually administered for 12 weeks, and anavar for 8 weeks.
Stacking testosterone with Anavar like this will keep your testosterone levels high; as opposed to them plummeting from an Anavar-only cycle.
Your dosage will depend on your experience.
If you’re new to steroids and this is your first cycle, it’d be wise to take a low dose. If you’re an experienced steroid user your body will be used to AAS, and thus a higher dose is better tolerated.
Anavar has a number of benefits for the body.
Let’s consider them in order of potency!
Anavar will help you to lose body fat.
A 2004 study of men aged between 60-87 who took 20 mg of Ananvar daily over a 12-week cycle showed significant reductions in body fat.
What’s more, those gain were retained after the men stopped using Anavar.
A number of studies have confirmed the ability of Anavar to seriously increase the strength level of the user.
A 2012 study showed that 20mg of Anavar daily for 8 weeks significantly increased the strength levels of teenage male burn victims.
Five years later they had maintained those strength gains.
Though not considered as a bulking agent, Anavar is a cutting compound that is not associated with accompanying loss of muscle tissue.
For women there will be a measure of mass gain in conjunction with fat loss, even if you are dieting to get ripped.
Anavar Side Effects
Some of the major side effects of Anavar include:
- Hair loss
- Increase in blood pressure
- Liver damage
Let’s take a closer look at each of the side effects below.
Due to test and anavar causing DHT levels to rise, you may experience some thinning of the hair on your scalp. How much thinning will depend on your genetics and how sensitive you are to anabolic steroids.
However, after your cycle, your hair is likely to thicken again once your hormones regulate back to normal.
If you’re anxious about losing any hair on anavar/testosterone – you can supplement with a DHT-blocking supplement such as finasteride or saw palmetto.
Or you can use a caffeine shampoo, which has proven to increase the lifespan of hair follicles on your scalp.
Increase in Blood Pressure
Anavar is a mild compound, thus it’s uncommon for users to notice any major side effects (when used in moderate doses for short periods of time).
Testosterone is a compound you have to be more careful when taking, as it will cause your cholesterol levels to shift in a negative way (LDL levels increasing), causing a spike in blood pressure.
This can result in an elevated body temperature, causing excessive sweating or a flushed look to your skin.
Certain supplements can help lower your LDL cholesterol levels, or bring your blood pressure back down to normal.
Here are a few that may help:
- Folic acid
If you plan on taking anavar/testosterone, it’s important to get regular checkups with your doctor so they can monitor your BP.
There are also blood pressure kits you can buy online, enabling you to monitor your levels even more frequently.
Gyno can happen on testosterone, especially if you’re taking high doses or exceptionally long cycles (12+ weeks).
This is because test will cause your testosterone levels to skyrocket, which in turn causes estrogen levels to rise. High estrogen levels are the culprit for the accumulation of breast tissue in males.
How likely you are to experience gyno will also depend on your genetic make-up i.e. how much estrogen your body naturally produces. The more E you naturally produce, the more likely you are to experience ‘man boobs’ whilst on anabolic steroids.
There are also reports of people experiencing gyno, whilst taking Anavar. This can come as a surprise to users as Anavar decreases testosterone levels.
However, studies confirm Anavar may alter your hormones in a way that can cause estrogen dominance, as boys who were given oxandrolone had more incidences of gyno.
If you’re concerned about gyno, you can take anti-estrogens to reduce the likelihood of this occurring. Clomid and Nolvadex are the 2 most common drugs bodybuilders use to battle gynecomastia.
Anavar is not particularly hepatotoxic and thus is unlikely to cause liver failure on its own. However, it can cause raised liver values if taking a high enough dose for extended periods of time.
Oral testosterone however is toxic on the liver and long-term use can cause liver failure, especially if there isn’t adequate time in-between cycles for the liver to recover.
The liver is a very resilient organ, that actually can experience a lot of damage and still not fail.
However, if you want to reduce your chances of experiencing any liver problems from your cycle, consider the following:
- Eliminate (or cut down) alcohol consumption
- Milk thistle supplement
- Artichoke leaf supplement
If you’re using test and anavar together to build muscle, you’ll be cutting yourself short by not adding any other bulking steroids to your stack.
Trenbolone or dianabol would be worthy additions, which will take your muscle gains to another level.
However, if you’re a newbie and want to get ripped – an anavar and test cycle will be an effective stack. This could also be a suitable beginner cycle, assuming you keep the dosing low-moderate.
If you’d like to burn even more fat and get more shredded, you could run clenbuterol alongside anavar/testosterone.
Clen will enable you to burn more calories than usual, via the process of thermogenesis, turbocharging fat loss.
Clenbuterol won’t result in any mass/size gains in humans (it can in animals), thus it’s typically used when cutting and is commonly taken with anavar.
Don’t take clenbuterol if you have any heart problems though as it’s known to significantly increase blood pressure due to additional adrenaline output.
Adding Anavar to Test Cycle
When you add Anavar to a testosterone cycle, you will experience serious gains in strength, and fat loss.
Muscle gains will be significant also but not as great as your fat loss and strength gains.
This is a relatively safe cycle that makes a smart choice for your first stack.
Types of Testosterone Steroids
The three main types of testosterone steroids as follows:
Testosterone enanthate is a slow lacking ester with a release time of between 8-10 days.
It is available in the US under the brand name Delatestryl.
Testosterone enanthate is typically injected once per week.
This is the most popular injectable form of testosterone due to its longer half-life that test cypionate.
Testosterone Cypionate is chemically different than enanthate but essentially works the same in the body.
It has a similar half life as enanthate. The main difference between the two is that Cypionate is mainly an American compound, while Enanthate is more international.
The two compounds are so similar that they can be interchanged throughout a cycle.
So, if you are on a 10-week testosterone cycle, you could conceivably use enanthate for the first 5 weeks and cypionate for the second 5 weeks or vice versa.
Testosterone Propionate has a half-life which is only about half as long as the previous two esters, that being around 4.5 days.
As a result in order to maintain sufficient blood plasma levels, you need to inject more frequently than when you are using enanthate or cypionate.
A typical injection protocol would be every other day.
Testosterone Dosage for Bodybuilding
Testosterone dosages vary between 60 and 300 mg per week. In a recent study, dosages were trialed at 50 mg, 100 mg, 125 mg, 300 mg and 600mg per week.
The results showed that the higher the dosage the greater the strength increases. However the sweet spot for muscle gain was 125 mg per week.
The study also suggested that injectable testosterone may be better for strength gains that the oral form.
Testosterone Benefits and Side Effects
Testosterone is the main anabolic hormone in the body.
Taking synthetic testosterone in conjunction with resistance training will increase your lean body mass and boost your strength levels. It will also enhance your bone strength.
They will also promote workout recovery and provide you with more energy for tour training.
The most common side effects of testosterone are gynecomastia, excess water retention, increased LDL (bad) cholesterol, decreased HDL (good) cholesterol and enhanced blood pressure.

Test and Anavar Cycle Results
Here is a good example of the results that you can get from stacking Test and Anavar . . .
This guy followed a 10 week cycle exactly as prescribed above.
He followed a 50 percent carb, 30 percent protein, 20 percent fat diet, consuming 2500 calories per day.
You can see that he has totally transformed his physique by packing on lean muscle mass and getting ripped at the same time.
The Verdict – Should You Stack Anavar and Testosterone?
If you’re a beginner or just someone wary of steroids’ dangerous side effects, an anavar and test cycle is a sensible choice. Also if you want to build muscle (but not huge amounts), this could be an effective duo to take.
However, if you’re looking for significant muscle gains you might be left a little disappointed, as testosterone can only do so much on its own.
You’d need to add a powerful steroid like dianabol, trenbolone or anadrol into this cycle if your goal is to get build a lot of size.
In conclusion, you’re likely to burn a considerable amount of fat on anavar and test, build some muscle, enhance your muscle tone and increase vascularity.
Note: If cutting, it’s recommended to eat in a calorie deficit whilst taking test/anavar, as this will enhance fat loss.
