Proviron is the brand name for mesterolone, an oral anabolic steroid derived from dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Doctors in some countries still prescribe it for low testosterone in men. In bodybuilding it is rarely the main drug in a cycle. People add it to other steroids, mostly for libido, a harder look and its reputation for keeping estrogen side effects down.
Many Proviron cycle guides get the basics wrong. Mesterolone is not 17-alpha-alkylated, so it is not the liver hazard it is often made out to be, and it was launched in the 1960s, not the 1930s. It also does very little for muscle growth or fat loss on its own.
This guide covers what Proviron is, how it is commonly used, what results are realistic, what is known about its side effects, and how it fits into recovery after a cycle. Nothing here is a recommendation to use it.
Key Takeaways
- Proviron (mesterolone) is an oral DHT derivative with weak effects on muscle. It is mostly added to other steroids for libido and a harder, drier look, not used on its own to build size or burn fat.
- It is not 17-alpha-alkylated, so its liver load is low compared with oral steroids like Anadrol or Winstrol. Low is not zero, and there is little data at bodybuilding doses.
- Mesterolone cannot convert to estrogen. Claims that it blocks the aromatase enzyme or makes other steroids stronger rest on theory and user reports, not trials.
- Its side effects are androgenic: hair loss in men prone to it, acne, worse cholesterol and prostate effects. Women risk virilization, some of it permanent.
- Commonly reported doses are 25-50mg a day on top of other steroids. These figures come from user practice, not studies, and recovery afterward depends on the whole stack.
What Is Proviron?

Proviron is the original brand name for mesterolone. The German drug company Schering developed it and brought it to market in the 1960s; Schering is now part of Bayer. It is sold as 25mg tablets and is still available on prescription in many countries. It has never been approved by the FDA in the United States.
Doctors have used it mainly to treat androgen deficiency (low testosterone) in men and, in the past, male infertility. Most clinical research on mesterolone is decades old and was done in patients, not athletes.
Chemically, mesterolone is DHT with a methyl group added at the carbon-1 position (1-alpha-methyl-DHT). That change slows its breakdown in the liver enough for it to work as a tablet, without the 17-alpha-alkylation that makes oral steroids like Anadrol, Dianabol and Winstrol hard on the liver. Our mesterolone compound page covers the chemistry and data in more detail.

How Proviron Works
Mesterolone binds to the androgen receptor, the same target as testosterone and DHT. Because it is already a DHT-type steroid, the aromatase enzyme cannot turn it into estrogen, and the 5-alpha reductase enzyme cannot make it any stronger.
Like DHT itself, it appears to be broken down quickly in muscle tissue. That is the usual explanation for why it does so little for muscle growth while still having clear androgenic effects on the skin, scalp, prostate and libido.
Mesterolone also binds strongly to sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), the protein that carries testosterone in the blood. In theory this could leave more of the body’s testosterone free and active. How much this matters in practice has not been well measured in steroid users.
Bodybuilding references often list an anabolic rating of 100-150 and an androgenic rating of 30-40 for Proviron. These figures are rarely traced to a source and do not match its reputation in practice as a weak muscle builder.
Proviron Cycle: How It Is Commonly Used
There is no studied “Proviron cycle”. The term describes user practice, and everything in this section is based on what users report. None of it is a recommendation.
Proviron is almost never run alone. In user reports it is an add-on: a tablet taken daily alongside a testosterone base or a cutting stack, often for the whole length of that cycle. The reasons users give are fairly consistent:
- Libido and mood: The most common reason. Many users report a better sex drive and sense of well-being while taking it.
- A harder, drier look: Lean users on a cut report more defined muscle, since mesterolone adds no estrogen-driven water retention.
- Estrogen control: Some add it hoping to reduce estrogen side effects from testosterone. The evidence for this is thin (see the table below).
- No injections: It is a tablet, which some users prefer to another injectable.

Common Claims vs the Evidence
| Claim | What the Evidence Says |
|---|---|
| “Burns fat” | No evidence that mesterolone burns fat directly. Fat loss on a cut comes from the diet; a drier look is not the same as lost fat. |
| “Builds lean muscle” | Weak at best. No trials show meaningful muscle gain from mesterolone alone. |
| “Blocks estrogen” | It cannot convert to estrogen. Claims that it blocks the aromatase enzyme are not backed by good human data. |
| “Makes other steroids stronger” | Based on its strong SHBG binding, which in theory raises free testosterone. Not shown in studies of steroid users. |
| “Boosts libido” | Plausible, since androgens support sex drive in men, and widely reported by users. Not tested in controlled trials at bodybuilding doses. |
| “Does not shut you down” | Often described as only mildly suppressive at clinical doses. Higher doses, and the other steroids in the stack, still suppress natural testosterone. |
Proviron Dosage: Clinical vs Reported
Medical use and bodybuilding use are two different things, and only medical use has been studied. The table below separates them. The bodybuilding figures are commonly reported doses, not tested or safe doses.
| Context | Daily Dose | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Medical use (androgen deficiency, outside the US) | One to three 25mg tablets | Prescribing information, under a doctor’s care |
| Most commonly reported in bodybuilding | 25-50mg | User reports, added to other steroids |
| Higher reported use | 75-100mg | User reports; more androgenic side effects |
Because of its commonly cited half-life of about 12 hours, users often split the daily amount into two doses. Reported run lengths usually match the cycle it is added to, typically 6 to 12 weeks. No controlled study has tested mesterolone at these doses, or for these purposes, in healthy men.
Some cycle guides claim that 40-60mg a day keeps natural testosterone production running and avoids suppression. There is no evidence for that claim.
Proviron Results: What to Expect
Set expectations low. Proviron does not produce the size or strength gains of testosterone, Dianabol or trenbolone, and the often-repeated claim of “10 pounds of lean muscle” from a cycle has nothing behind it.
- Libido and well-being: Usually the first thing users notice.
- A harder look in lean users: More visible muscle detail during a cut, mostly when body fat is already low.
- Little or no added muscle: Gains on a Proviron cycle almost always come from the other drugs in the stack, plus training and diet.
- No direct fat loss: There is no good evidence that it raises metabolism or body temperature.
These results come from user reports, not trials, and they depend heavily on the rest of the cycle.
Proviron Side Effects
Proviron is milder than most steroids in some ways and fully androgenic in others. Its main risks come from its androgen activity, not from estrogen or the liver.
Liver: Lower Risk Than Most Oral Steroids
Many cycle guides warn that Proviron is liver-toxic “like all oral steroids”. That is not accurate. Liver damage from oral steroids is mostly linked to 17-alpha-alkylation, and mesterolone does not have it. Its liver load is generally described as low.
Low is not the same as zero. There is little data on high doses, long use, or stacking with alkylated orals, and black-market tablets may not contain what the label says.
Hair Loss
Mesterolone is a DHT derivative, so it can speed up male pattern hair loss in men who are genetically prone to it. Men without that tendency may see no change. Finasteride, often used for hair loss, works by blocking the enzyme that turns testosterone into DHT. Mesterolone does not need that enzyme, so finasteride does not reduce its effect on the scalp. Our guide to steroids that don’t cause hair loss covers which compounds carry less of this risk.
Acne and Oily Skin
Androgens make the skin’s oil glands more active. That can cause breakouts on the face, back and shoulders, especially in people who had acne as teenagers. This is an androgen effect, not an estrogen one.
Prostate
DHT is the main hormone behind prostate growth, and mesterolone acts on the same receptor. Androgens can enlarge the prostate and worsen urinary symptoms, especially in older men. Proviron’s prescribing information lists prostate cancer as a reason not to take it, because androgens can feed an existing tumor.
Some guides claim Proviron causes prostate cancer and cite a rat study as proof. That study looked at sperm and hormone levels, not the prostate (see Fertility below), and there is no good evidence that mesterolone causes prostate cancer.
Cholesterol and Heart Health
Oral androgens tend to lower HDL (“good”) cholesterol, and anabolic steroid use in general is linked to worse blood lipids and heart damage. Data specific to mesterolone at bodybuilding doses is limited, but there is no reason to assume it is exempt, particularly when it is stacked with other steroids. Blood pressure and lipid tests are the only way to see what a cycle is doing.
Fertility and Sperm
Proviron was once prescribed for male infertility, but a double-blind trial run by the World Health Organization found it did not improve pregnancy rates in men with unexplained infertility. In a study in adult male rats, mesterolone lowered sperm quality and reduced sex hormone levels. That is animal data, but it points the same way.
Androgens that suppress the body’s own hormone signals also reduce sperm production. That risk rises with higher doses and with other steroids in the stack.
Virilization in Women
Mesterolone is strongly androgenic for how little it does for muscle, which makes it a poor fit for women. Reported use by women is rare. Signs of virilization include a deeper voice, facial and body hair, clitoral enlargement, acne and menstrual changes. Voice changes and clitoral enlargement may not reverse after stopping.
Side Effects Proviron Does Not Cause
- Estrogenic gynecomastia: Mesterolone cannot aromatize, which puts it among the steroids that don’t cause gyno on their own. Any gyno risk in a stack comes from testosterone or other aromatizing compounds.
- Estrogen-driven water retention or bloating
Does Proviron Suppress Testosterone? Is PCT Needed?
Cycle guides often say PCT is “always required” after Proviron. The real answer depends on the whole cycle.
On its own, at clinical doses, mesterolone is often described as one of the less suppressive androgens, which is one reason doctors used it in men. It is still an androgen, and higher doses push the body’s own testosterone production down. In practice the question rarely comes up: almost every Proviron cycle includes testosterone or other steroids that suppress natural production by themselves.
Post-cycle therapy (PCT) usually means drugs such as clomiphene (Clomid) or tamoxifen (Nolvadex), taken to restart natural testosterone. Neither drug is approved for this use, and the evidence is weak. In a 2023 study of 641 men seen at a UK clinic after stopping anabolic steroids, only 48% had fully recovered their reproductive hormones, and men who had used more compounds were less likely to recover.
The practical point is that adding Proviron to a stack means one more compound, not a recovery aid. Blood work before and after a cycle is the only way to know where recovery stands. Our page on PCT and what the research shows covers recovery in more depth.
Proviron vs Masteron
Proviron is most often compared with Masteron (drostanolone). Both are methylated DHT derivatives that cannot convert to estrogen, both are used mostly during cutting phases, and both carry the same androgenic side effects. They differ in form and in how much they do for muscle.
| Proviron | Masteron | |
|---|---|---|
| Compound | Mesterolone (1-alpha-methyl-DHT) | Drostanolone (2-alpha-methyl-DHT) |
| Form | Oral tablets | Injectable (propionate or enanthate) |
| Past medical use | Androgen deficiency in men | Advanced breast cancer in women |
| Converts to estrogen | No | No |
| Liver load | Low (not 17-alpha-alkylated) | Low (injectable) |
| Effect on muscle | Weak | Mild, mainly preserves muscle on a cut |
| Typical role in a cycle (user reports) | Daily add-on for libido and a harder look | Cutting and contest prep |
| Hair loss risk | Present (DHT derivative) | Present (DHT derivative) |
Neither is a mass builder, and both suppress natural testosterone when used at bodybuilding doses with other steroids.
Legality, Drug Testing and Fake Products
United States: Mesterolone is not FDA-approved and is a Schedule III controlled substance, so there is no legal prescription route. Possessing it without a prescription is a federal offense.
Elsewhere: Proviron is a prescription medicine in many countries. In the UK, anabolic steroids are Class C drugs. Possession for personal use is not an offense, but supply and importing are illegal.
Sport: Mesterolone is on the WADA Prohibited List at all times, in and out of competition.
Product quality: Tablets sold as Proviron outside a pharmacy are often not what the label says. A 2022 meta-analysis of black-market steroid samples found that 36% were counterfeit (wrong or missing active ingredient) and another 37% were substandard (wrong dose or contaminated).
The Bottom Line
Proviron is easy on the liver and weak on muscle. Its real effects are on libido, skin, scalp and prostate, not on fat loss or size.
- It is not 17-alpha-alkylated and cannot convert to estrogen, so it avoids the liver strain and water retention of many oral steroids. It still brings hair loss, acne, worse cholesterol and prostate effects.
- Its reputation for burning fat, building lean muscle and boosting other steroids rests mainly on theory and user reports. No trials in healthy men support it.
- Commonly reported doses are 25-50mg a day alongside other steroids. Recovery depends on the whole stack, and blood work is the only way to check it.
