Clenbuterol and Winstrol are two of the drugs most often mentioned together for cutting, and they are usually compared as if they did the same job. They don’t. Clenbuterol (clen) is a beta-2 agonist asthma drug that raises heart rate and energy use. It is not a steroid. Winstrol (stanozolol) is an oral or injectable anabolic steroid that helps hold on to muscle and gives a hard, dry look, but burns no fat on its own.
That difference decides which one fits which goal and which side effects to expect. People who stack them take on two separate sets of risks: one on the heart’s rate and rhythm, the other on cholesterol, the liver and natural testosterone. This guide compares the two for cutting, including the clen and Winstrol stack. Nothing here is a recommendation to use either drug.
Key Takeaways
- Clenbuterol is a beta-2 agonist asthma drug, not a steroid. Winstrol (stanozolol) is a DHT-derived anabolic steroid. They work in completely different ways.
- Clen raises energy use and fat breakdown, an effect that fades within weeks as its receptors adapt. Winstrol does not burn fat; it helps keep muscle while the diet removes fat.
- Winstrol is 17-alpha-alkylated and strains the liver. In a small JAMA study, 6mg a day for six weeks cut HDL (“good”) cholesterol by about a third.
- Clen’s main risks are a racing heart, arrhythmias, low potassium and high blood sugar. It does not shut down natural testosterone. Winstrol does.
- Stacking the two adds their risks together, and both strain the heart and blood vessels in different ways. No study has tested the combination.
Clenbuterol vs Winstrol at a Glance

What Is Clenbuterol?
Clenbuterol hydrochloride is a long-acting bronchodilator. It relaxes the muscles around the airways, and some countries outside the United States approve it as a prescription asthma medicine, typically at around 20 to 40mcg a day. In the US it is not approved for human use at all. The only FDA-approved clenbuterol product is a syrup for horses with breathing problems, and it may not be given to animals raised for food.
Farmers once used clenbuterol illegally to produce leaner meat, and people in Europe and China were poisoned after eating meat with clen residues. Their symptoms, tremor, a racing heart and headache, are the same effects users describe today. Our clenbuterol compound page has a short profile.
How Clenbuterol Works
Clen switches on beta-2 receptors, which sit in the airways, fat tissue, skeletal muscle, blood vessels and the heart. In fat tissue it triggers lipolysis, the release of stored fat into the blood so it can be burned. It also raises resting energy use and slightly raises body temperature, an effect called thermogenesis. The slight rise in temperature is a by-product of that extra energy use, not the main way it burns calories.
Its half-life is commonly cited at around 36 hours, far longer than that of a short-acting inhaler such as albuterol. With daily use, blood levels keep climbing for about a week before they level off, so a dose that feels fine on day two can feel very different by day six.
Why the Effect Fades
With steady use, beta-2 receptors become less responsive, a tolerance well documented for this class of drug, so users report that clen’s effects fade within a few weeks. The common workarounds are cycling it (two weeks on, two weeks off) or adding ketotifen, an antihistamine believed to restore the receptor response. That idea rests on older, small studies, not research in clen users.
What Is Winstrol?
Winstrol is the best-known brand name for stanozolol, an anabolic steroid built on the dihydrotestosterone (DHT) structure. Winthrop Laboratories introduced it in the early 1960s. In the US its main approved use was preventing attacks of hereditary angioedema, a rare inherited condition that causes episodes of severe swelling. It is no longer marketed for human use in the US.
It comes as oral tablets and as a water-based injectable suspension. A methyl group at the 17-alpha position lets the tablets survive the first pass through the liver, and it is also why stanozolol strains the liver. The injectable form avoids that first pass, but it is the same 17-alpha-alkylated molecule and is still considered hard on the liver. Our Winstrol guide covers cycles and results in more depth.
How Winstrol Works
Stanozolol binds to the androgen receptor. In muscle, that supports protein synthesis and helps the body hold on to lean tissue when calories are low, which is its main use on a cut. Because it is already a DHT derivative, the aromatase enzyme cannot turn it into estrogen. With no rise in estrogen, there is no estrogen-driven water retention, so muscle looks harder at low body fat. Winstrol is not a diuretic: the “dry” look comes from what it does not do, not from flushing water out.
Two Common Claims That Don’t Hold Up
“Winstrol blocks cortisol.” The claim that it burns fat by lowering cortisol is not supported by good evidence. Fat loss on a Winstrol cycle comes from the calorie deficit. The drug’s role is to help keep the muscle underneath.
“Winstrol raises testosterone.” Stanozolol sharply lowers sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), the protein that carries testosterone in the blood, so a larger share of what is circulating is free. That is not the same as raising testosterone. Like other anabolic steroids, Winstrol shuts down the body’s own production, which is why it is usually run with a testosterone base.
Which Is Better for Fat Loss?
Clenbuterol is the only one of the two with a direct fat-loss effect. Short studies of beta-2 agonists in healthy volunteers, mostly young men, show that they raise resting energy use and fat burning for a while after a dose. That is a real effect, but a modest one, and those studies were not weight-loss trials.
There are no controlled trials of clenbuterol for fat loss in people. Most of its fat-burning and muscle-sparing reputation comes from livestock and rodents given far higher doses per kilo than people take, and animal results often do not carry over to humans.
Winstrol does not burn fat. People lose fat on Winstrol cycles because they are dieting; the drug changes how much muscle they keep and how hard they look as the fat comes off. Neither drug replaces a calorie deficit. Without one, clen’s extra energy use is easily cancelled out by a little extra food.
Which Is Better for Keeping Muscle on a Cut?
Winstrol. Holding on to muscle in a calorie deficit is the main reason it is used, and the ability of androgens to support lean mass is well established in people. Clen’s muscle-sparing effect is clear in animals but thin in humans, and at the doses people tolerate it is no substitute for enough protein and hard training.
For strength, users commonly report modest gains on Winstrol. On clen, a high heart rate, tremor and muscle cramps often make hard training harder, especially cardio.
Clenbuterol vs Winstrol Side Effects
The claim that clen has “fewer side effects” is misleading. The two drugs harm different systems. Clen’s risks are mostly acute and fall on the heart’s rate and rhythm. Winstrol’s build up over a cycle: cholesterol, the liver and the body’s own hormone production.
Clenbuterol Side Effects
- Fast heartbeat and palpitations, the most common complaint
- Tremor, especially in the hands
- Insomnia, anxiety and restlessness
- Sweating and headaches
- Muscle cramps
- Low potassium (hypokalemia) and high blood sugar, both seen again and again in poisoning cases
- Higher blood pressure in some users
The serious end is well documented. Case reports describe heart attacks, dangerous arrhythmias and heart muscle injury in young, otherwise healthy people who took clenbuterol for weight loss or bodybuilding. In rat studies, clenbuterol has caused heart muscle cell death. People with heart disease, high blood pressure, an overactive thyroid or a history of arrhythmia face the highest risk.
Winstrol Side Effects
- Lower HDL and higher LDL cholesterol
- Liver strain, from raised liver enzymes to cholestatic liver injury (a blocked flow of bile)
- Shut-down of natural testosterone production
- Joint pain, commonly reported, though the reason is not well understood
- Acne, oily skin and faster male pattern hair loss in men prone to it
- Higher blood pressure
- Virilization in women: a deeper voice, facial hair and clitoral enlargement, some of it permanent
The cholesterol effect is the best documented. In a small study published in JAMA, men given 6mg of stanozolol a day for six weeks saw their HDL cholesterol fall by about a third, a far bigger drop than in men given 200mg of testosterone enanthate a week. Commonly reported bodybuilding doses are four to eight times higher than 6mg. With long-term use, 17-alpha-alkylated steroids have also been linked to peliosis hepatis (blood-filled cysts in the liver) and liver tumors.
Commonly Reported Doses and Cycle Lengths
The figures below are what users commonly report in bodybuilding forums and coaching circles. They are not clinical doses and they are not recommendations. No dose of either drug has been tested for fat loss or cutting in healthy people.
Clen is dosed in micrograms (mcg) and Winstrol in milligrams (mg). One milligram is 1,000 micrograms, and mixing the two up is a dangerous mistake.
Clenbuterol: Commonly Reported Doses
| Group | Daily Dose | Reported Pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Men | Starts at 20mcg/day, raised in small steps to 60-120mcg/day | Two weeks on, two weeks off |
| Women | Starts at 10-20mcg/day, commonly 20-40mcg/day | Two weeks on, two weeks off |
| Asthma (where approved) | Around 20-40mcg/day | Prescribed treatment, not a cycle |
Many reported cutting doses sit well above asthma doses. Because of the long half-life, fast dose increases push blood levels higher than the daily numbers suggest. Clen is usually taken once a day in the morning, since later doses disrupt sleep. Our guide to clenbuterol and yohimbine covers another common clen stack.
Winstrol: Commonly Reported Doses
| Group | Dose | Reported Cycle Length |
|---|---|---|
| Men, oral | 25-50mg/day | 6-8 weeks |
| Men, injectable | 50mg every day or every other day | 6-8 weeks |
| Women, oral | 5-10mg/day | 4-6 weeks |
Cycles are kept short mainly because of the liver and cholesterol effects. Most reported men’s cycles include a testosterone base, because Winstrol shuts down natural production. Women report virilization even at low doses, and many avoid Winstrol entirely. Our Anavar vs Winstrol comparison covers the milder alternative most often discussed.
Stacking Clenbuterol and Winstrol
Clen and Winstrol are often run together in the last weeks of a cut or before a show. The logic is that they work through different pathways: clen adds a little extra energy use and fat breakdown, while Winstrol helps keep muscle and gives a harder look as body fat drops. No study has tested the combination, so everything known about it comes from user reports and from what each drug does on its own.
How the Stack Is Commonly Run
The most commonly described version looks like this, almost always on top of a testosterone base. These are user-reported patterns, not recommendations.
| Compound | Commonly Reported Dose | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Winstrol (oral) | 25-50mg/day | The final 6-8 weeks of the cut |
| Clenbuterol | Raised from 20mcg/day, commonly to 60-120mcg/day | Two weeks on, two weeks off, alongside the Winstrol |
| Testosterone (base) | Often near replacement level, 100-200mg/week | Throughout, to cover suppressed natural production |
Some users instead start clen after the Winstrol ends, in the belief that it helps hold on to muscle while testosterone is low. There is no human evidence for that, and clen does nothing to restart natural testosterone production.
Where the Risks Add Up
- The heart, from two directions: Clen raises heart rate and can trigger arrhythmias. Winstrol worsens cholesterol and can raise blood pressure, and anabolic steroid use more broadly is linked to heart muscle damage and faster artery disease. The stack puts short-term and long-term strain on the same organ.
- Cramps and joints: Clen users commonly report muscle cramps and Winstrol users report joint pain, which together make training harder in exactly the weeks the stack is meant to help.
- Sleep: Clen often disrupts sleep, and poor sleep during a diet makes it harder to hold on to muscle.
Blood pressure checks and blood work (lipids, liver enzymes and red blood cell count) before and during a cycle are the only way to see what a stack like this is doing to the body.
Testosterone Suppression and PCT
Clenbuterol does not act on hormones, so on its own it does not shut down testosterone and does not call for post-cycle therapy. Winstrol does. After a Winstrol cycle, or a stack that includes it, natural testosterone production can take weeks to months to come back.
Post-cycle therapy (PCT) is the practice of taking drugs such as tamoxifen (Nolvadex) or clomiphene (Clomid) after a cycle to restart the body’s own production. Neither drug is approved for this use. Users commonly report starting PCT a few days after the last oral Winstrol dose and running it for about four weeks.
The evidence on recovery is less reassuring than most cycle guides suggest. In a 2023 study of 641 men seen at a UK clinic after stopping anabolic steroids, only 48% had fully recovered their reproductive hormones. PCT was linked to faster short-term recovery, and men who had used more compounds were less likely to recover. Our guide to PCT for testosterone covers what the research shows.
Overview
- Form: Oral Capsules
- Dosage: 25-40 mg daily for PCT or for gyno flare-ups
- Typical Cycle: 4-6 weeks
- Cost: $81.95
- Stacking Options: Higher testosterone doses or post-cycle recovery
Pros
- Large mortality benefit in ER-positive breast cancer; five years of adjuvant treatment cuts recurrence roughly by half and breast cancer mortality by about a third, with the effect persisting well past the treatment period
- Works in premenopausal and postmenopausal women alike, unlike aromatase inhibitors, which makes it the default for younger patients
- Bone-protective in postmenopausal women, since it acts as a partial estrogen agonist in bone — the reverse of anastrozole's main liability
Cons
- Endometrial hyperplasia and a two-to-three-fold increase in endometrial cancer risk in postmenopausal women, requiring investigation of any abnormal bleeding
- Elevated risk of venous thromboembolism and pulmonary embolism, particularly around surgery or immobility
- Hot flashes, vasomotor symptoms and mood effects are common; CYP2D6 status and strong inhibitors such as certain SSRIs can reduce conversion to the active metabolite
Legality and Drug Testing
United States: Stanozolol is a Schedule III controlled substance, and no human product is currently marketed. Clenbuterol is not approved for human use; the only approved product is a prescription medicine for horses.
Elsewhere: Rules vary. In the UK, anabolic steroids are Class C drugs: possession for personal use is not an offense, but supply and importing are illegal. Clenbuterol is a prescription asthma drug in some countries and veterinary-only in others.
Sport: Both are on the WADA Prohibited List at all times, in and out of competition. Stanozolol was behind one of sport’s best-known doping cases, when sprinter Ben Johnson lost his 1988 Olympic 100m gold. A clenbuterol positive can also come from contaminated meat in some countries, and cyclist Alberto Contador lost his 2010 Tour de France title after a clen positive that he blamed on contaminated beef.
Counterfeit Risk
Black-market products often do not contain what the label says. A 2022 meta-analysis pooled 19 studies covering more than 5,000 black-market steroid samples. On average, 36% were counterfeit and a further 37% were substandard. Clen sold as a “research liquid” has no pharmaceutical quality control, and with a drug dosed in micrograms, an error in concentration can mean a large overdose.
Clenbuterol or Winstrol: Which Is Better for Cutting?
Neither is a shortcut, and “better” depends on the goal and on which risks matter most.
- For fat loss itself: Clen has a direct but modest effect that fades within weeks. Winstrol has none. The calorie deficit does nearly all the work either way.
- For keeping muscle on a hard diet: Winstrol is the stronger of the two here, at the cost of liver strain, worse cholesterol and testosterone suppression.
- For a hard, dry look before a show: Winstrol, but only once body fat is already low.
- For heart risk: Clen is the bigger short-term danger, especially for anyone with a heart condition, high blood pressure or a thyroid problem. Winstrol’s harm builds more slowly through cholesterol and blood pressure.
- For women: Clen carries no virilization risk, while Winstrol carries a high one. Neither is safe.
For most people trying to get lean, the tools with the best evidence are still a moderate calorie deficit, high protein, resistance training and enough sleep. They drive most of the results people credit to either drug.
The Bottom Line
Clenbuterol and Winstrol do different jobs on a cut: clen adds a modest, fading boost to fat burning, Winstrol helps keep muscle, and neither replaces the diet.
- Clen’s main risks are short-term and fall on the heart’s rate and rhythm. Winstrol’s build over a cycle through worse cholesterol, liver strain and the shut-down of natural testosterone.
- Stacking them adds both sets of risks, and no study has tested the combination. Everything known about the stack comes from user reports.
- Both are banned in sport, Winstrol is a controlled substance, clen is not approved for human use in the US, and black-market products are often not what the label says.
