A testosterone propionate cycle is a course of testosterone attached to propionate, the shortest of the common testosterone esters. Because the ester is short, test prop starts working and clears within days, so it is commonly injected every other day rather than once or twice a week. Bodybuilders mostly use it for short cutting cycles, usually reported as 8 to 10 weeks at around 100mg every other day.

Once the ester is removed in the body, prop is the same hormone as any other testosterone product. It carries the same side effects: estrogen conversion, androgenic effects, thicker blood, worse cholesterol, and suppression of natural testosterone and sperm production.

This guide covers what testosterone propionate is, how it compares with enanthate and cypionate, the doses and injection schedules users report, realistic results, side effects and what the research says about recovery afterward. It also corrects several errors that still circulate about prop. Nothing here is a recommendation to use it.

Testosterone propionate is a prescription drug and a controlled substance in the United States and many other countries. This article is for educational and harm-reduction purposes and is not medical or legal advice. Using testosterone above medical replacement doses carries serious health risks, including heart disease, thickened blood, hormonal disruption and infertility. Speak with a qualified healthcare professional before making any decision about anabolic steroids. Testosterone is prohibited by WADA in all competitive sports. Muscle & Brawn does not encourage the use of anabolic steroids or of prescription drugs obtained outside a legitimate medical relationship.

Key Takeaways

  • Testosterone propionate is fast-acting, not slow-releasing. Its commonly cited half-life is about one day, so users report injecting it every day or every other day.
  • Commonly reported cycle doses are 50mg every day or 100mg every other day for 8-10 weeks. These figures come from user practice, not clinical trials.
  • In a 1996 trial, men given 600mg of testosterone a week who also trained gained 6.1kg of fat-free mass in 10 weeks. The ester changes timing, not what the hormone does.
  • Prop still converts to estrogen and DHT and still shuts down natural testosterone. In a WHO trial, 200mg of testosterone a week left about two-thirds of men with no sperm within six months.
  • PCT is commonly started 2-3 days after the last prop injection. In a 2023 study of 641 men who had stopped anabolic steroids, only 48% had fully recovered their hormones.

What Is Testosterone Propionate?

Testosterone propionate is testosterone with a propionate ester attached at its 17-beta position (see its PubChem record). The ester makes the hormone dissolve in oil and slows its release from the injection site. Once it reaches the blood, enzymes cut the ester off and leave plain testosterone, the same hormone the testes make.

It is one of the oldest testosterone medicines. Introduced in the late 1930s, it was the first testosterone ester sold as a drug, and doctors used it for decades to treat low testosterone. Longer esters such as enanthate and cypionate later replaced it for most prescriptions because they need far fewer injections. Propionate is still prescribed in some countries, most often as one of the four esters in Sustanon 250.

Common Myths About Test Prop

Several claims about propionate in older cycle guides are wrong:

  • “It is slow-releasing.” The opposite is true. Propionate is the shortest of the common testosterone esters. It releases and clears faster than enanthate, cypionate or the long esters in Sustanon.
  • “Equipoise is a type of testosterone.” It is not. Equipoise is boldenone undecylenate, a separate steroid sold as a veterinary drug. See our Equipoise cycle guide.
  • “It is a vet-only drug.” Testosterone propionate is a human medicine. It has been prescribed to people since the 1930s and still is in some countries.
  • “It has no estrogenic side effects.” Prop is ordinary testosterone once the ester is removed, so it converts to estradiol like any other testosterone. Users often report less water retention on prop, but that is more likely down to the moderate doses and strict diets of typical prop cycles than to the ester.

How the Propionate Ester Works

An ester is a chemical tail that controls how fast testosterone leaves the oil depot in the muscle. Short esters release quickly and long esters release slowly. Propionate’s commonly cited half-life is about one day (often quoted as 0.8 days), compared with about 4-5 days for enanthate and about 8 days for cypionate.

Two practical consequences follow. First, blood levels rise within a day or two of the first injection and settle into a stable range within about the first week, while enanthate takes several weeks to level off. Second, levels fall quickly once injections stop or are missed, so the schedule has to be frequent to avoid large swings.

Weight for weight, propionate also delivers a little more testosterone. About 84% of each milligram of testosterone propionate is testosterone, against about 72% for enanthate and 70% for cypionate, because the propionate tail is lighter.

Users who choose prop over the longer esters usually give three reasons: it starts working quickly, it clears quickly if side effects appear, and it lets a cycle end with only a short gap before PCT. The cost is many more injections. A 10-week cycle at every other day means about 35 injections, against about 20 for twice-weekly enanthate. Our testosterone enanthate cycle guide covers the longer ester in detail.

Testosterone Propionate Dosage and Injection Frequency

The doses below are those commonly reported by bodybuilders. They are not clinical doses and they are not recommendations. Most clinical trials of high-dose testosterone used enanthate or cypionate rather than propionate.

Why Every Day or Every Other Day

With a half-life of about a day, a twice-weekly prop schedule would leave blood levels falling for most of each gap. Users report that this brings the swings in mood, energy and libido they are trying to avoid. That is why prop is commonly injected every other day, and some users inject smaller daily doses to keep levels flatter. A Monday, Wednesday and Friday schedule is also reported, but it leaves a longer gap over the weekend.

More injections mean more chances for problems at the injection site. Users commonly report that propionate stings and aches more after injection than the longer esters. Rotating sites and using a new sterile needle and syringe every time are standard harm-reduction advice. Our guide on how to inject testosterone covers technique.

Testosterone Propionate Cycle Protocols: What Users Report

The tables below describe how prop cycles are commonly run, based on user reports. They are not recommendations, and no controlled study has tested these stacks in healthy men.

Commonly Reported First Cycle (8-10 Weeks)

WeeksCompoundCommonly Reported Dose
1-8 (up to 10)Testosterone propionate100mg every other day or 50mg daily (about 350mg/week)
After the cyclePCTStarted 2-3 days after the last injection

Beginners commonly start with testosterone alone, so they learn how their body handles estrogen conversion, androgenic effects and suppression without a second drug clouding the picture. Many first-time users still choose enanthate over prop because of the injection count.

Commonly Reported Cutting Stack (8 Weeks)

WeeksTestosterone PropionateDrostanolone Propionate (Masteron)
1-8100mg every other day100mg every other day

Both compounds are short-acting, so they can be injected on the same schedule and both clear within days before PCT. Some users swap Masteron for an oral such as Anavar (oxandrolone). Every added compound brings its own side effects and, as the recovery data below shows, lowers the odds of a full hormonal recovery.

Commonly Reported Short-Ester Mass Stack (8-10 Weeks)

WeeksTestosterone PropionateNandrolone Phenylpropionate (NPP)
1-8 (up to 10)100-150mg every other day100mg every other day

Prop is less often used to bulk, because the same blood levels can be reached with enanthate and fewer injections. When it is, it is usually paired with NPP, the short-ester form of nandrolone. Nandrolone is generally described as strongly suppressive and users commonly report sexual side effects with it, which is why testosterone stays in the stack.

Prop at the Start or End of a Longer Cycle

Some users run prop for the first 2-4 weeks of an enanthate or cypionate cycle, because the longer esters take weeks to reach stable levels. Others switch to prop for the last two weeks of a long-ester cycle, so that the cycle ends on a short-acting ester and the wait before PCT is days rather than weeks. Neither approach lowers the total exposure to testosterone, and both add injections.

Testosterone Propionate Results: What to Expect

Prop is testosterone, so its effect on muscle is that of testosterone at a given blood level. The best evidence comes from controlled trials that used enanthate:

  • The 1996 NEJM trial (Bhasin and colleagues): Healthy men given 600mg of testosterone enanthate a week for 10 weeks gained 6.1kg of fat-free mass when they also trained, and 3.2kg without training. Men who trained on placebo gained 1.9kg. Strength rose most in the group that combined testosterone with training.
  • The 2001 dose-response trial (Bhasin and colleagues): Men whose own testosterone was switched off with a drug were given 25-600mg a week for 20 weeks. Fat-free mass rose with the dose, by about 3.4kg at 125mg, 5.2kg at 300mg and 7.9kg at 600mg. HDL (“good”) cholesterol fell as the dose went up.

Users commonly report noticing the first changes within 2-3 weeks on prop, earlier than with enanthate, because levels rise faster. On a cut, the main reported results are holding on to muscle and strength in a calorie deficit and a harder look as body fat comes down. On a short bulk, users report weight gain that includes some water and glycogen, not only muscle. These reports are not controlled data and depend heavily on diet and training.

What Test Prop Will Not Do

  • Burn fat on its own: fat loss on a cut comes from the diet
  • Build more muscle than the same blood level of testosterone from another ester
  • Make up for poor training, sleep or nutrition

Testosterone Propionate Side Effects

Because the ester is removed in the body, prop has the side effects of testosterone itself. Its short action changes how fast side effects appear and fade, not whether they happen. Testosterone is converted to estradiol by the aromatase enzyme and to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by 5-alpha reductase, and several side effects run through those two hormones.

More testosterone means more estradiol. At cycle doses this can bring water retention, nipple sensitivity and gynecomastia (breast tissue growth in men), which can become permanent.

Many users take an aromatase inhibitor such as anastrozole to limit this, either from the start or only when symptoms or blood work call for it. Overdoing it has its own costs. In a 2013 NEJM study, Finkelstein and colleagues found that men need estrogen to control body fat, and that both testosterone and estrogen support sexual function. Pushing estradiol too low is commonly reported to cause joint aches, low libido and low mood.

Overview
  • Form: Oral Capsule
  • Dosage: 0.5mg 1-2 times weekly
  • Typical Cycle: As needed based on blood work (best for managing sides on cycle)
  • Cost: $64.03
  • Stacking Options: Testosterone enanthate or cypionate
Pros
  • Well-established efficacy — ATAC trial showed superior disease-free survival versus tamoxifen in postmenopausal hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer
  • Substantially lower risk of endometrial cancer and thromboembolic events than tamoxifen
  • Once-daily oral dosing, few significant drug interactions
Cons
  • Accelerated bone mineral density loss, with elevated fracture risk over years of use
  • Arthralgia and joint stiffness are common and a frequent reason patients stop treatment
  • Ineffective in premenopausal women unless ovarian function is suppressed, since it only blocks peripheral aromatisation

Acne, Oily Skin and Hair Loss

Acne and oily skin on the face, back and shoulders are among the most commonly reported side effects. Testosterone’s conversion to DHT can speed up male pattern hair loss in men who are genetically prone to it. Men without that tendency are much less likely to be affected, but a cycle can bring forward hair loss that would have happened later anyway.

Injection Site Problems

Injecting every day or every other day multiplies the number of needle punctures. Pain, swelling and redness are commonly reported. Abscesses and infections are documented risks of non-sterile injection, and underground products are not made to pharmaceutical standards. Sharing needles or vials also carries a risk of blood-borne infections such as hepatitis and HIV.

Thicker Blood

Testosterone stimulates red blood cell production. A rising hematocrit (the share of the blood made up of red cells) thickens the blood, which is thought to raise the risk of clots. The Endocrine Society’s guideline for men on prescribed testosterone advises stopping treatment if hematocrit goes above 54% until it comes back down. Cycle doses are far higher than prescribed ones.

Cholesterol, Blood Pressure and the Heart

High-dose testosterone lowers HDL cholesterol, as the 2001 dose-response trial showed, and users commonly report higher blood pressure during a cycle. Long-term use carries more serious risks. In a 2017 study in Circulation, Baggish and colleagues compared long-term anabolic steroid users with weightlifters who did not use them. The users had weaker heart pumping function and more plaque in their coronary arteries.

Mood and Aggression

Responses vary a lot between people. In a 2000 placebo-controlled trial by Pope and colleagues, most men given 600mg of testosterone cypionate a week for six weeks showed minimal psychiatric effects, but a small number developed marked hypomanic symptoms. Libido is usually higher during a cycle and can drop sharply after it ends while natural production recovers.

Suppression and Fertility

Injected testosterone signals the brain to stop releasing LH and FSH, the hormones that drive the testes. Natural testosterone production falls, the testes shrink and sperm production drops. In a WHO contraception trial published in 1990, about two-thirds of healthy men given 200mg of testosterone enanthate a week had no sperm in their semen within six months.

A short ester does not prevent this. It only shortens the wait before recovery can begin, and natural testosterone production can stay suppressed after the cycle ends. That is why low libido, fatigue and low mood are common in the weeks after a cycle.

Women

For women, testosterone carries a high risk of virilization: a deeper voice, facial and body hair, clitoral enlargement, acne and menstrual changes. Some of these, especially voice changes, can be permanent.

Bloodwork Commonly Tracked

Doctors who monitor men on testosterone, and harm-reduction guides for people who use it without a prescription, commonly list these checks before, during and after a cycle:

  • Total testosterone and estradiol (a sensitive estradiol test)
  • Hematocrit and hemoglobin
  • A lipid panel (HDL and LDL cholesterol)
  • Liver enzymes and kidney function
  • LH and FSH, to track recovery after the cycle
  • Blood pressure

Testosterone Propionate PCT

Post-cycle therapy (PCT) is the practice of taking drugs such as tamoxifen (Nolvadex) or clomiphene (Clomid) after a cycle to restart the body’s own testosterone production. Neither drug is approved for this use.

When PCT Starts After Prop

Because propionate clears within days, users commonly report starting PCT 2-3 days after the last injection, compared with about two weeks after enanthate or cypionate. Starting while injected testosterone is still high would work against the PCT drugs, because the brain is still being told to stay switched off. The most commonly reported protocols, run alone or together, are:

PCT DrugCommonly Reported ProtocolDuration
Tamoxifen (Nolvadex)40mg/day weeks 1-2, 20mg/day weeks 3-44 weeks
Clomiphene (Clomid)50mg/day weeks 1-2, 25mg/day weeks 3-44 weeks

  • Form: Oral Capsules
  • Dosage: 25-40 mg daily for PCT or for gyno flare-ups
  • Typical Cycle: 4-6 weeks
  • Cost: $81.95
  • Stacking Options: Higher testosterone doses or post-cycle recovery
Pros
  • Large mortality benefit in ER-positive breast cancer; five years of adjuvant treatment cuts recurrence roughly by half and breast cancer mortality by about a third, with the effect persisting well past the treatment period
  • Works in premenopausal and postmenopausal women alike, unlike aromatase inhibitors, which makes it the default for younger patients
  • Bone-protective in postmenopausal women, since it acts as a partial estrogen agonist in bone — the reverse of anastrozole's main liability
Cons
  • Endometrial hyperplasia and a two-to-three-fold increase in endometrial cancer risk in postmenopausal women, requiring investigation of any abnormal bleeding
  • Elevated risk of venous thromboembolism and pulmonary embolism, particularly around surgery or immobility
  • Hot flashes, vasomotor symptoms and mood effects are common; CYP2D6 status and strong inhibitors such as certain SSRIs can reduce conversion to the active metabolite

  • Form: Oral capsules (25 mg each, 60 capsules)
  • Researched Dosage: 25 mg to 50 mg daily for PCT
  • Typical Cycle: 4-6 weeks
  • Cost: $69.95
  • Stacking Options: Tamoxifen, HCG, Enclomiphene
Pros
  • A SERM that blocks estrogen at the hypothalamus, prompting the body to make more LH, FSH and its own testosterone.
  • Studies in men with low testosterone found it raised testosterone while preserving sperm production, unlike TRT.
  • It is oral, inexpensive and has been in medical use since 1967, so its effects are well documented.
Cons
  • About a third of each dose is zuclomiphene, a long-lasting isomer linked to mood swings, irritability and low mood.
  • Blurred vision, floaters and light sensitivity have been reported; visual symptoms are a reason to stop.
  • It is FDA-approved only for female infertility, so use in men is off-label, and this product is sold for research use only.

What the Evidence Says

The best recent data comes from a 2023 study of 641 men seen at a UK clinic after stopping anabolic steroids. Only 48% had fully recovered their reproductive hormones (LH, FSH and testosterone back in the normal range). Other findings:

  • PCT was linked to faster short-term recovery. Men who used PCT recovered in a median of 13 weeks, compared with 26 weeks for men who did not. That link only held for men who had stopped within the previous three months.
  • More compounds meant worse odds. Men who had used four different steroids were about a quarter as likely to recover as men who had used one.
  • The authors did not endorse PCT. They called for proper research into it.

A short ester shortens the wait before PCT. It does not make a full recovery more likely. Blood work before and after the cycle is the only way to know where recovery stands. Our guide to PCT for testosterone covers recovery in more depth.

Legality and Drug Testing

United States: Testosterone and its esters are Schedule III controlled substances. Possessing them without a prescription is a federal offense, and selling them carries heavier penalties. US doctors mainly prescribe cypionate and enanthate for low testosterone.

Elsewhere: Rules vary. In the UK, anabolic steroids are Class C drugs. Possession for personal use is not an offense, but supply, and importing by post or courier, are illegal.

Sport: Testosterone is on the WADA Prohibited List at all times, in and out of competition. Anti-doping labs flag it through the urinary steroid profile and confirm that testosterone is synthetic with carbon isotope ratio testing, so a fast-clearing ester is no guarantee of passing a test.

Counterfeit Risk

Underground steroids are often not what the label says. A 2022 meta-analysis of 19 studies covering 5,413 black-market steroid samples found that 36% were counterfeit (wrong or missing active ingredient) and another 37% substandard (wrong dose or contaminated). A vial labeled testosterone propionate may hold a different dose, a different ester or a different drug.

The Bottom Line

Testosterone propionate is fast-acting testosterone: it needs an injection every day or two, works within days and clears within days, but it carries every risk of testosterone itself.

  • Commonly reported cycles run 8-10 weeks at about 100mg every other day, mostly while cutting. The short ester changes timing and the number of injections, not what the hormone does.
  • It still converts to estrogen and DHT, thickens the blood, lowers HDL cholesterol and shuts down natural testosterone and sperm production.
  • PCT is commonly started 2-3 days after the last injection, but only about half of men in the largest recovery study had fully recovered their hormones, and stacking more compounds lowered the odds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because its half-life is about a day, users commonly report injecting propionate every other day, and some inject smaller doses daily. Twice-weekly injections, normal for enanthate, leave prop levels falling for most of each gap. These are user-reported schedules, not medical advice.
Blood levels rise within a day or two of the first injection and settle within about the first week. Users commonly report noticing changes in strength, energy and libido within 2-3 weeks, earlier than with enanthate.
Neither is stronger: both release the same hormone. Propionate gives slightly more testosterone per milligram (about 84% against 72%) and acts and clears faster, which users prefer for short cutting cycles. Enanthate needs far fewer injections and gives steadier levels on a twice-weekly schedule, which is why it is the usual choice for longer cycles and TRT.
Users commonly report starting PCT 2-3 days after the last propionate injection, compared with about two weeks after enanthate or cypionate. PCT drugs are not approved for this use, and in a 2023 study only 48% of men had fully recovered their hormones after stopping steroids.
It can. Propionate converts to estrogen like any testosterone. Users often report less bloating on prop cycles, but that probably reflects the moderate doses and strict diets used when cutting. Gynecomastia is still a risk, especially at higher doses.
No. It is a human medicine that has been prescribed since the 1930s and is still sold in some countries, most often as part of Sustanon 250. It is a controlled substance in the US. The claim that it is vet-only, and the claim that Equipoise is a type of testosterone, both come from older guides and are wrong. Equipoise is boldenone, a separate steroid.
