A Halotestin cycle is a short course of fluoxymesterone, an oral anabolic steroid known for raising strength and aggression without adding much body weight. In strength sports and contest prep, a Halotestin cycle is commonly reported as 10 to 40mg a day for just 2 to 4 weeks, almost always on top of testosterone. The short length is not a sign that the drug is mild. It reflects the fact that Halotestin is one of the harshest oral steroids for the liver, it sharply worsens cholesterol, and it is linked to irritability and aggression.

This guide covers what fluoxymesterone is, what it was approved to treat, how cycles are reported to be run, what results are realistic, and what the drug label and research say about its risks, including hormone recovery afterward. Nothing here is a recommendation to use it. Fluoxymesterone is a controlled substance in the US, it is banned in sport, and pharmaceutical Halotestin is now hard to find, so most of what is sold under the name comes from underground labs.

Halotestin (fluoxymesterone) is a Schedule III controlled substance in the United States, is controlled in many other countries and is prohibited by WADA in all sports. This article is for educational and harm-reduction purposes and is not medical or legal advice. Halotestin carries serious health risks, including liver injury, harmful cholesterol changes, raised blood pressure, mood changes, hormonal shutdown and infertility. Speak with a qualified healthcare professional before making any decision about anabolic steroids. Muscle & Brawn does not encourage the use of anabolic steroids or of prescription drugs obtained outside a legitimate medical relationship.

Key Takeaways

  • Halotestin (fluoxymesterone) is an oral, 17-alpha-alkylated derivative of testosterone. It was approved for low testosterone, delayed puberty and some breast cancers, and athletes use it mainly for strength, not size.
  • Commonly reported cycles are 10-40mg a day for 2-4 weeks, usually alongside testosterone. These figures come from user practice, not clinical trials in healthy men.
  • The fluoxymesterone label warns of cholestatic jaundice, peliosis hepatis and liver tumors. A short cycle limits the exposure; it does not remove the risk.
  • It does not convert to estrogen, so it causes little water retention. Its main costs are liver strain, lower HDL cholesterol, higher blood pressure, aggression and testosterone shutdown.
  • In a 2023 study of 641 men who had stopped anabolic steroids, only 48% had fully recovered their hormone levels. Stacking more compounds lowered the odds of recovery.

What Is Halotestin?

Halotestin is the original brand name for fluoxymesterone, a synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid made from testosterone. Upjohn brought it to market in the 1950s. Chemically it is testosterone with three changes: a methyl group at carbon 17 (17-alpha-alkylation, which lets it survive the liver when swallowed), a fluorine atom at carbon 9 and a hydroxyl group at carbon 11. For a short overview of the compound, see our fluoxymesterone page.

It comes only as tablets. The Halotestin brand has been discontinued in the US, and fluoxymesterone is rarely prescribed anywhere today, because modern testosterone products and breast cancer treatments have taken its place.

Approved Medical Uses

Fluoxymesterone was approved for three uses, each under medical supervision:

  • Male hypogonadism: Testosterone replacement in men whose bodies make too little. The label dose was 5-20mg a day.
  • Delayed puberty in boys: Short courses at low doses, prescribed by specialists, with regular X-rays to check bone age. Androgens can close growth plates early and stunt final height, which is why this was never a decision for a teenager or a coach.
  • Breast cancer in women: Palliative treatment of advanced, recurrent breast cancer in some postmenopausal women, at 10-40mg a day in divided doses.

How Halotestin Works

Like other anabolic steroids, fluoxymesterone binds to the androgen receptor. The label describes the classic androgen effects: the body holds on to more nitrogen, sodium, potassium and phosphorus, loses less calcium in urine, builds more protein and breaks less of it down. Androgens also raise red blood cell production.

Its commonly cited anabolic rating is 1900 and its androgenic rating 850, against 100 for testosterone. These numbers come from old animal tests and predict little about what it does in people. In practice, Halotestin is not known as a muscle builder. Its reputation rests on fast strength gains, a hard look and a rise in aggression, and why it acts this way is not well understood.

Fluoxymesterone is not converted to estrogen by the aromatase enzyme. A 2012 lab study found that it strongly blocks 11-beta-HSD2, an enzyme that switches off cortisol in the kidney. The authors suggested this could contribute to raised blood pressure and salt and water retention. That was cell research, not a human trial.

Halotestin Cycle Protocols: What Users Report

The tables below describe how Halotestin cycles are commonly run, based on user reports and coaching literature. They are not clinical doses and they are not recommendations. There is very little controlled research on fluoxymesterone as a performance drug in healthy men.

Two patterns stand out. Cycles are short, because liver strain builds with every week on a 17-alpha-alkylated oral. And nearly every reported cycle includes testosterone, because Halotestin shuts down the body’s own testosterone production.

Commonly Reported Pre-Meet or Pre-Contest Cycle (12 Weeks)

WeeksTestosterone EnanthateHalotestin (Oral)
1-8300-500mg/weekNone
9-12300-500mg/week10-20mg/day

This is the most commonly described pattern. Halotestin is added only in the last 2-4 weeks before a powerlifting meet, a strength event or a physique show, on top of a testosterone cycle that is already running.

Commonly Reported Higher-Dose Cycle (Advanced Users)

WeeksTestosterone EnanthateHalotestin (Oral)
1-6300-500mg/weekNone
7-10300-500mg/week20-40mg/day

40mg a day is the top of the label’s range for breast cancer, a disease in which doctors accepted serious side effects as part of treatment. Bodybuilding sources commonly treat it as a ceiling, and a few weeks at that dose is described as the limit, not a starting point.

Halotestin Dosage (Reported Ranges)

GroupDaily DoseReported Cycle Length
Men, entry level10-20mg/day2-3 weeks
Men, intermediate20-30mg/day3-4 weeks
Men, advanced30-40mg/day2-4 weeks
WomenRarely reportedStrongly androgenic, high virilization risk

Users usually split the daily dose into two or three smaller doses, since the drug’s half-life is about 9 hours. Many report taking one dose an hour or two before training.

Medical Doses vs Reported Doses

UseDoseContext
Male hypogonadism (label)5-20mg/dayReplacement for missing testosterone, with monitoring
Breast cancer (label)10-40mg/day, dividedPalliative cancer care, with monitoring
Strength and contest prep (reported)10-40mg/day for 2-4 weeksUsually on top of high-dose testosterone, without monitoring

The reported sport doses overlap with the medical ones, but the setting is different. Patients were checked with regular liver tests and blood counts, and men on replacement doses were not also taking several hundred milligrams of testosterone a week.

Halotestin Results: What to Expect

Halotestin is not a mass builder. It does not cause the water and weight gain of Dianabol or Anadrol, and users rarely report much change on the scale. Its results are about performance and appearance.

Commonly Reported Results

  • Strength: The main reason people use it. Users report quick gains in top-end strength within the first week or two, which is why it is timed for a meet or a max attempt.
  • Drive and aggression: Many users describe more intensity in training. This is also the effect most linked to irritability and conflict outside the gym.
  • Hard, dry look: With no estrogen-driven water retention, muscles can look denser at the end of a diet, which is why it is used in the final weeks of contest prep.
  • Muscle and strength kept on a diet: Like other androgens, it helps hold on to muscle when calories are low.

What Halotestin Will Not Do

  • Burn fat: Fat loss comes from the calorie deficit created by diet and activity, not from the drug. Halotestin may help keep muscle and strength while that deficit does its work.
  • Add much lasting muscle: Users commonly report that much of the strength gained in a short cycle fades after it ends.
  • Replace testosterone: It suppresses natural production, which is why it is almost always run with a testosterone base.

Users typically report the strength effect within one to two weeks. These timelines come from user reports, not trials.

Halotestin Side Effects

The side effects are the reason Halotestin cycles are so short. Most come from the same features that make it work: it is a strong androgen and a 17-alpha-alkylated oral.

Liver Toxicity

Oral 17-alpha-alkylated steroids put heavy strain on the liver. The fluoxymesterone label, like those of other alkylated androgens, warns of cholestatic hepatitis and jaundice, peliosis hepatis (blood-filled cysts in the liver that can rupture and bleed) and liver cell tumors, some of them malignant. The tumors and peliosis were linked mainly to long-term use. Warning signs of liver injury include yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, itching and pain under the right ribs.

Many users take TUDCA during oral cycles. Evidence for it in steroid-related liver injury is limited, and it does not make an oral steroid safe. Liver symptoms on a cycle mean stopping the drug and seeing a doctor.

Cholesterol and Heart Risk

Oral 17-alpha-alkylated steroids are known to cut HDL (“good”) cholesterol sharply and to raise LDL, and Halotestin is commonly ranked among the worst. A short cycle limits how long the lipids stay out of range, but repeated cycles add up.

Anabolic steroid use more broadly is linked to heart damage. A 2017 study in the journal Circulation found that long-term steroid users among experienced male weightlifters had weaker heart pumping function and more coronary artery plaque than weightlifters who did not use them.

Blood Pressure and Thicker Blood

Androgens make the body hold on to sodium and water, and the 11-beta-HSD2 finding above offers one more possible route. Users commonly report raised blood pressure on Halotestin. Androgens also raise hematocrit (the share of the blood made up of red cells), which makes blood thicker. Home blood pressure checks are a simple early warning.

Mood, Aggression and Sleep

Halotestin is the steroid users most often describe as raising aggression. There are no controlled trials of its effect on mood in healthy men. The closest evidence comes from a randomized trial of high-dose testosterone (600mg a week for six weeks): most men showed little change in mood, but a small minority had marked manic reactions. There is no way to know in advance who will react that way.

The androgen label lists anxiety, depression and changes in libido. Users commonly describe a short temper, and the stress of a contest or meet can make that worse at home and at work.

Testosterone Suppression and Fertility

Fluoxymesterone suppresses LH and FSH, the pituitary hormones that tell the testes to make testosterone and sperm. The label lists reduced sperm count at higher doses. Natural production stays shut down for the whole cycle and can take months to recover afterward (see the PCT section).

Hair Loss and Acne

As a strong androgen, it can speed up male pattern hair loss in men who are genetically prone to it. Hair lost this way does not reliably grow back after stopping. Acne and oily skin are common.

Virilization in Women

Fluoxymesterone is strongly androgenic. In women treated for breast cancer, the label lists virilization: a deeper voice, facial and body hair, clitoral enlargement, acne and menstrual changes. Voice changes and clitoral enlargement can be permanent. This is why Halotestin is rarely reported among female athletes.

Gynecomastia

Because fluoxymesterone does not aromatize, it is not expected to cause estrogen-driven gyno on its own. The androgen label still lists gynecomastia as a possible side effect, and in a typical cycle the testosterone base is the more likely cause.

Bloodwork Before and After a Halotestin Cycle

Blood tests are the only way to see what a cycle is doing to the liver, lipids and hormones. A baseline before starting makes later results easier to read.

TestWhy It Matters
ALT, AST, GGT, bilirubinLiver strain. ALT and AST also rise after hard training, so GGT and bilirubin help tell the difference

Halotestin PCT: What the Research Shows

Post-cycle therapy (PCT) is the practice of taking drugs such as tamoxifen (Nolvadex) or clomiphene (Clomid) after a cycle to restart the body’s own testosterone production. Neither drug is approved for this use.

What Users Typically Run

Halotestin itself clears within a few days. But because most cycles include testosterone enanthate, users commonly report starting PCT about two weeks after the last testosterone injection. When Halotestin is run without an injectable, PCT is usually started within a few days of the last tablet. The most commonly reported protocols are:

Overview
  • Form: Oral Capsules
  • Dosage: 25-40 mg daily for PCT or for gyno flare-ups
  • Typical Cycle: 4-6 weeks
  • Cost: $81.95
  • Stacking Options: Higher testosterone doses or post-cycle recovery
Pros
  • Large mortality benefit in ER-positive breast cancer; five years of adjuvant treatment cuts recurrence roughly by half and breast cancer mortality by about a third, with the effect persisting well past the treatment period
  • Works in premenopausal and postmenopausal women alike, unlike aromatase inhibitors, which makes it the default for younger patients
  • Bone-protective in postmenopausal women, since it acts as a partial estrogen agonist in bone — the reverse of anastrozole's main liability
Cons
  • Endometrial hyperplasia and a two-to-three-fold increase in endometrial cancer risk in postmenopausal women, requiring investigation of any abnormal bleeding
  • Elevated risk of venous thromboembolism and pulmonary embolism, particularly around surgery or immobility
  • Hot flashes, vasomotor symptoms and mood effects are common; CYP2D6 status and strong inhibitors such as certain SSRIs can reduce conversion to the active metabolite

What the Evidence Says

The best recent data comes from a 2023 study of 641 men seen at a UK clinic after stopping anabolic steroids. Only 48% had fully recovered their reproductive hormones (LH, FSH and testosterone back in the normal range). Other findings:

  • PCT was linked to faster short-term recovery. Men who used PCT recovered in a median of 13 weeks, compared with 26 weeks for men who did not. That link only held for men who had stopped within the previous three months.
  • More compounds meant worse odds. Men who had used four different steroids were about a quarter as likely to recover as men who had used one.
  • The authors did not endorse PCT. They described it as “illicit, ill-defined, and not recommended,” and called for proper research.

A typical Halotestin cycle is at least two compounds, and often more. Blood work before and after is the only way to know whether recovery is complete.

Halotestin vs Trenbolone vs Dianabol

These three are often compared because all have a reputation for strength. They do very different things.

Most reported problemsLiver, HDL, moodMood, sleep, sweating, heart and lipidsWater, gyno, blood pressure, liver

Halotestin vs Trenbolone: Trenbolone is injected, so it does not put an oral steroid’s first-pass strain on the liver. It is one of the strongest androgens in use and is reported to build far more muscle, but it is also known for mood changes, poor sleep and heavy effects on cholesterol and the heart. Both drugs are linked to aggression.

Halotestin vs Dianabol: Dianabol is also a 17-alpha-alkylated oral, but it aromatizes. It adds much more weight, partly water, and brings estrogen-related problems such as gyno and bloating that do not apply to Halotestin. Halotestin raises strength with little weight gain, which is why it is popular with athletes who compete in weight classes and in the final weeks of contest prep.

Legality, Drug Testing and Counterfeits

United States: Fluoxymesterone was approved by the FDA as a prescription drug and is a Schedule III controlled substance. With the Halotestin brand discontinued, it is now hard to get even on prescription. Possessing it without a prescription is a federal offense, and selling it carries heavier penalties.

Elsewhere: Rules vary. In the UK, anabolic steroids are Class C drugs. Possession for personal use is not an offense, but supply, and importing by post or courier, are illegal.

Sport: Fluoxymesterone is on the WADA Prohibited List at all times, in and out of competition, and anti-doping labs test for its metabolites.

Counterfeit Risk

Pharmaceutical Halotestin is scarce, so almost everything sold under the name comes from underground labs. A 2022 meta-analysis pooled 19 studies covering 5,413 black-market steroid samples. On average, 36% were counterfeit (wrong or missing active ingredient) and another 37% were substandard (wrong dose or contaminated). With a liver-toxic oral, a tablet that holds more than the label says, or a different steroid, is a real danger.

The Bottom Line

Halotestin can raise strength quickly, but it is one of the harshest oral steroids for the liver, cholesterol and mood, and it builds little lasting muscle.

  • Reported cycles are short, 10-40mg a day for 2-4 weeks and usually on top of testosterone, because of liver toxicity, not because the drug is mild. The label warns of jaundice, peliosis hepatis and liver tumors.
  • It does not burn fat and does not convert to estrogen. Any fat loss comes from the diet, and the main costs are liver strain, lower HDL cholesterol, higher blood pressure, aggression and testosterone shutdown.
  • Pharmaceutical Halotestin is scarce, so most of what is sold comes from underground labs, and in the largest recovery study about half of men had not fully recovered their hormones after stopping steroids.

Frequently Asked Questions

It can. As a strong androgen, fluoxymesterone can speed up male pattern hair loss in men who are genetically prone to it. Hair lost this way does not reliably grow back after stopping. In women, hair thinning on the scalp and new facial hair can be part of virilization.
Fluoxymesterone does not convert to estrogen, so on its own it is not expected to cause estrogen-driven gynecomastia. The androgen label still lists gynecomastia as a possible side effect, and in a typical cycle the testosterone base is the more likely cause.
It was approved for testosterone replacement in men with hypogonadism, for delayed puberty in boys under specialist care, and for palliative treatment of advanced breast cancer in some postmenopausal women. Modern treatments have largely replaced it, and it is rarely prescribed today.
In medicine, yes. In sport, almost every reported cycle runs it on top of testosterone, because Halotestin shuts down the body’s own testosterone production for the length of the cycle and beyond.
No. Fat loss comes from a calorie deficit, not from the drug. Halotestin may help hold on to muscle and strength while dieting, and because it causes no estrogen-driven water retention, muscles can look harder.
Users commonly describe more drive and aggression in training, and some describe irritability, a short temper and poor sleep. The androgen label lists anxiety, depression, changes in libido, headache and nausea among possible side effects. Yellowing skin or eyes and dark urine are signs of liver trouble and need a doctor.
Its half-life is about 9 hours, so the drug itself clears within a few days of the last dose. Its metabolites can be detected by anti-doping labs for longer, and it is banned in and out of competition.
