Sibutramine SIBU

A weight-loss drug (Meridia) that was FDA-approved before being pulled from the market in 2010, after a large human safety study showed it raised the risk of heart attack and stroke. It's a clear example of a drug that worked for short-term weight loss but wasn't safe long-term.

Also known as Meridia, Reductil

Duration Was intended for chronic use before market withdrawal

Was FDA-approved (Meridia) for weight loss but withdrawn from the US and global markets in 2010 after being linked to increased cardiovascular events; it has since been found as an undisclosed adulterant in some illegal 'natural' weight-loss products.

Where this comes from FDA prescribing information (withdrawn); post-marketing safety data; FDA adulterant-testing literature
