One of the major complains of the keto diet is that it is expensive. It will almost always be more expensive to eat healthy. Let’s go over some tips for eating keto on a budget.
Why is Keto So Expensive?
First off, why is it more expensive to follow the keto diet than loading up on carbs? Think about the cheapest food. They are all carb-based foods such as Ramen Noodles, cereal, bread, potatoes and things like that. On the keto diet you are eating proteins, green leafy vegetables and fats for the most part. That is much more expensive than loading up on the carb-loaded foods above.
Another thing that makes keto expensive is the essentials cost more. When you are going through a lot of heavy whipping cream, grass-fed butter, almond milk, almond four, MCT oil, etc. it is a lot more expensive than the alternatives. It was cheaper to just grab whole milk, regular butter, half and half and canola oil.
Cheap Keto Grocery List
Let’s go over some items that are a staple of the keto diet.
It’s hard to find a single food item with as much bang for its buck as eggs. You can still grab a dozen eggs for $1 and that’s a good starting point for any keto diet. Whether you want to eat them hard boiled, scrambled with butter or over easy, they can be a solid foundation for any meal. If you are looking to do the keto diet cheap then eggs should be a big part of that and you should be going through multiple dozens.
Chicken thighs are better for the keto diet due to their high fat content. Without the bone you can get these under $3 per pound easily. With the bone-in you can get these under $2 per pound. Think about that. $2 for 3-4 servings of chicken. Anyone who is looking to save money should be on board with chicken thighs.
On the keto diet you can get high fat ground beef and that is a very cheap option. Usually you can get a pound for around $3. Think about the opportunities that present itself with ground beef. You can make burgers. You can make taco salad. The opportunities are endless. You can find more ground beef recipes here.
Pork is a great option for anyone on the keto diet. It is very cheap. Depending on the quality of pork you purchase it can be obtained for under $3 a pound easily, especially if you go for boneless country style ribs.
Bacon is a little on the higher end of cost of the proteins listed. It can usually be found on sale for around $4 a pound. It costs a little more, but it’s bacon. Everyone loves bacon.
Depending on what part of the country you are in, maybe you don’t refer to it as lunch meat. It seems people in some parts of the country completely wall off people in other parts of the country. It’s deli meat. Slice turkey, ham, roast beef, etc. Grab some sliced cheese while you are at the deli, too. There is almost always some type of lunch meat on sale, so you can usually grab one for under $4 a pound. The same goes for cheese. Simply roll up the meat and cheese and you have a great snack.
Believe it or not, may helps fill you up. You take that lunch meat or a burger and lather it up with some mayo and you are increasing the fat content and making your meal more filling.
Broccoli, cauliflower, onion and lettuce from the produce section are all very affordable. You can get a good bit of all three of these for under $5. You are not going to buy them already chopped up or pre-packaged. You are going to buy a head of lettuce and whole portions of broccoli, cauliflower and onion.
Canned Green Beans
These are a very cheap option for a dinner side. They are under a dollar for a can and can make 3-4 servings of green beans and a very cheap, tasty side. Just add some onion, butter and bacon. Now you have a cheap, tasty side dish.
If you don’t like pork rinds, you should do all you can to come around on them. They are zero carbs, high fat and very filling. You throw a few in a Ziploc baggie and it turns your snack into a lunch. Remember those meat and cheese roll ups? Throw in some pork rinds and now you have lunch. You can get a big old bag of them for under $2. Get on the pork rind bandwagon!
Coffee is cheap and a very good appetite suppressant. It might not seem cheap because you can spend up to $10 per pound, but a pound of coffee lasts a long time. Plus you can even add some butter, heavy cream and MCT oil to it and create bulletproof coffee.
