Why Powerlifting? Do It For You

If you have powerlifted for any given time, you have been asked the question “Why?” It is difficult for the normal person, even the normal gym goer to understand why we put our bodies through what we do.
In most cases when I tell people the long list of injuries I have had, they look at me like I am insane. When I think about it, they might be right!
I have no idea why I try to explain myself to people who ask about powerlifting. I guess part of me hopes that they will gain interest, maybe even give it a try. I tell them about how many hours a week I spend at the gym. They look at time in the gym as a punishment; I look at it as a release.
It’s a time I get to forget what is going on in my day to day life, and lift. I tell them how I have to count on others to be in the gym for me to reach my goals, and do certain lifts. The public looks at that as negative; I look at it as a time to build relationships with people. With a good training partner, you can count on them for nearly anything.
I always get asked if it is worth the money? I normally just laugh and ask what money? Even the best of the best don’t make much in this sport. Honestly 99.9% of us will never see a dime from the sport, but money was never the reason either.
When it comes down to it, I don’t know why. I think most powerlifters would tell you the same. If I could put it into words for you I would. All I can tell you is this, it’s not for the money, it’s not for fame, and its sure not because chicks love powerlifters.
I do this to attempt to accomplish what seems to be a never-ending goal. I do this because I have never had a drug give me the high that lifting does. I do this because when I see that bar bending, no matter what is going on in the world, I forget it. Really at the end of the day why do I do it? I do it for ME!
