Understanding Workouts – Do I Work Traps with Shoulders or Back?
Do I Work Traps with Shoulders or Back?
Traps can be worked with either your shoulders or back. Your traps and shoulders work together on many shoulder exercises, such as the military press and lateral raise.
Your traps are also heavily used during many back exercises, especially deadlifts.
I would suggest adding traps to the day that makes the most sense. If your back day is exceptionally taxing, add traps to your shoulder workout. And vice versa. There really is no best way.
How Many Sets for Traps?
You do not need to work your traps with exercise after exercise. 3 to 6 sets per week is enough. Perform either one exercise for 3 to 5 sets, or two exercises for 3 sets. The best traps exercises are:
- Power Barbell Shrugs
- Power Dumbbell Shrugs
If you perform both deadlifts and a form of overhead press each week, additional trap work may not be needed.
