I hear it nearly everyday...

"For legs can I just run or do cardio?"

I used to say the same thing Steve. I used to walk to and from work 5 miles and thought I didn't need to train legs.

I understand guys that don't want to squat. Not everyone has the same goals, and most just want to look good at the beach. I respect this goal.

But with that said, if someone comes to me wanting size and strength and won't squat, I take it as a sign that they are not willing to put in the effort no matter what I ask them to do.

My "Big Three," as it were, are the Squat, the Deadlift, and the Overhead Press.

In my opinion, all three should be trained with no exceptions; unless you have some kind of serious injury or handicap that prevents you from doing so.

1) Because they're hard!
2) Because they think they're bad for the knees. (If they were shown proper technique they would not feel any strain on the knees)

I think there are a lot of people who think if you dont barbell back squat your beneath them but should realise a lot of the time strength is skill specific (get someone who can back squat 400lbs I bet the first time they front squat they won't be able to get more than 200lbs so is someone that front squats 200lb stronger than a 400lb back squatter?).

Don't get me wrong I love squatting/deadlifting and usually do it three times a week to failure when not injured but what people should realise is that a lot of the old timers had no choice, all they had was a barbell, dumbells, bench and maybe a rack.....

You don't need much more than that. A high bar and dips bars are nice additions though.
