Over the course of several emails this week, Faz has convinced me to join him and Steve in the heavy madness. The basic premise will be to do a variation of the big three each session for three sessions per week. I will do this for around 2 weeks, looking to set PBs in the second week and then deload the 3rd week if I need it which I undoubtedly will to begin with while my body gets used to the new routine.
Exercise selection is as follows: Bench, CGBP in Slingshot and OHP Squat, front squat and box squat Sumo pull, arched GM and SLDL Some of these exercises such as sumos, fronts, box squats, SLDLs and GMs will be done using a volume approach; I will work up to a heavy but not max triple and then do multiple sets (6 to start with) with short rests of around 60-90 seconds. The other exercises will be done using a daily max style where I work up to a heavy single and then back off around 20% and hit up 3-5 more sets to get some volume in. This routine will be hard to adjust to in the early stages but I have 4 months until my next meet so am using this time to acclimatise and push myself to lift heavier, more often. It also gives me plenty of form practice to improve things like my dismal pull and lastly I will be getting my raw strength back up before jumping back into gear. All of these things combined will hopefully see me posting a more respectable attempt at a 705kgs total in my next meet. Tomorrow will be the first day of the routine and as an intro I'm going to work up to a moderately heavy 3x3 on OHP, back squats and sumos.
