Rich,
when my lower back got so sore, and I had the pain 24/7. I went with 1 week of no deads or squats, then 4 weeks of lower weight, higher reps. It worked great for me, now I am building the squat and deads back up, and still I m pain free. So I agree, low weight, high reps will probably help you...at least it helped me.
