From the 7th rep onwards they started to get a touch harder and I figured since the last one was one of those which really had to be ground out to get back up, I wouldn't push for an 11th rep...especially with no bars in place and nobody to help should I have misjudged doing an extra rep and getting stuck under it.

Digging the broom handle work. Was doing them for a long time until I finally gained front squat rack position flexibility.

I finally worked out, or rather it dawned on me, how I managed to bruise the back of my head...I thought it was when I struck it with a moving barbell but then realised that wasn't it...because of the nature of the area that's bruised, it seems I did it when using the make-shift bench, aka the Reebok step, because of the intense bobbly surface; so, I'm assuming whilst pressing the barbell, the back of the head was taking a beating just by being in contact with the step.

It was painful enough just laying the upperback on and shifting into place but it never dawned on me how much pressure the large raised bobbles on the top of the step might cause on the body, especially under loads.

Live and learn, won't make that mistake again!

Thanks Ravi

Would have pushed for an 11th rep but knew there was no way I would make it, I was already at the point of pushing through a complete halt of the bar halfway up but managed to get it to continue its upward path, thankfully. No spotters, no bars... but hubby was downstairs in the event of an emergency and I had discussed with him how to proceed should I have got stuck under it.

Next week is definitely time to get those safety bars used for their intended purpose, that's for sure. This week, on the other hand, won't be a problem.

In that case I think you should start a bit heavy like instead of 16 it may be 18 or so. Keep your max wt. fixed and move wt of initial sets towards max. We can handle initial sets more comfortably then 4rth or 5th set. You will be automatically add wt to your max eventually. Keep lifting ...

In theory, my bench max is probably a lot higher than I'm giving myself credit for, having only ever done 1 bench press before anyway (as in 4 sets of singular reps, just to warm-up and see what I could achieve, at that time), prior to that and since then I haven't done any...and only did floor presses beforehand, all of which were below 40kg, simply because I had no decent set-up for unracking and racking the barbell etc but it sufficed at the time.

My aim is to begin with 20kg, the weight of a normal barbell (generally the norm), but a few weeks building up and getting used to form won't do me any harm, especially since the barbell does permit a lighter load than 20kg.
