Default What's the difference?

What is the difference between a food allergy and a food intolerance? Are they basically the same thing?

I am sure that there is a difference. I think that if you are allergic to it, it could make you break out or make you stop breathing or something. I would say if you have an intolerance you can still eat it but it could just make your stomach upset or something like that. I say that being allergic is more serious.

Allergies tend to result in the food attacking the system in a bad way and generally very quickly; it ranges from blisters, itchy mouth, to the more severe breathing problems and death.

Food intolerances, may cause things like wind, headaches, upset stomach and rashes etc.

People tend to know the difference between a food allergy and intolernace, once they have suffered an allergic reaction; the issue is that the line has been blurred by so many wrongly stating they are allergic to X or Y food and the term allergy tends to be used where the term intolernace should be.

I personally have intolerances to some but allergies to others: as a child, I found out I was allergic to mustard, brazil nuts and hazelnuts, all of which are bordeline anaphylactic with swollen lips and throat for me so I have to avoid them, making it dangerous for me to mess with them, not that they would necessarily kill me but an allergy can be a tricky fine line to walk, especially with foods...milk, on the other hand, I'm only intolerant to.
