Excellent article on pull-ups/lat work by Dr. Michael Camp! Dr. Camp considers pullups "the upper body squat."

i think pullups are great, and personally, i've had noticeable upper back development with no other back exercises than deadlift and pullup.
however, i do have a question about pullups. is there a difference in effectiveness for big guys over skinny guys? i always see skinny guys with small backs easily ripping off a dozen or so pullups. in my opinion, based on my observation, the pullup is not effective for growing their lats. but i could be wrong; there could be other reasons.

My personal opinion is that they probably don't do them wide enough to really engage the lats. Shoot, you could do just "Lat Raises" hanging there from the bar and lift your body up 4-6 inches just using the lat and you would tax the crap out of them.

One of the things that I learned from doing this video of myself awhile back is that I need to widen my grip and "pull" up from the elbows, if that makes sense. Don't make it a bicep pull, which I was close to doing!

This is an EXCELLENT question for Dr. Camp tonight, though!!! You should join us!!!

I suppose that could be due to the relatively lower resistance afforded by their lower bodyweight. If that is so, instead of bodyweight pullups, may be weighted pull ups would be more useful for skinnier guys?

There are a number of key points working the back (lats):

Hands are hooks
Pull with elbows
Go for the stretch! Once you feel the stretch, reverse and start contracting the same muscle/area.
Stretch afterward
