Cool

Well,

I honestly believe that it was a lot more Phun to be a Weightlifter, Powerlifter, Bodybuilder or general Weight Trainer before Arnold and Weider Caused "Pumping Iron" to become a household word.

I liked it back when it was considered a weird sub-cult understood by few and regarded with fear and loathing by the great unwashed.

On the other hand, without the Vulgarization of Muscle Building and so on...

There would be far fewer gyms to choose from, and less good "U" Tube videos and Weight Forums like this one.

I guess there was over a thousand students in my High School, and while several guys would flip through my muscle magazines, I was the only one who subscribed to them. (early '70s)

And coached told stories of bodybuilders who had to have someone comb their hair for them, because their Arms were too stiff to reach their head.

{HMMMmmnn....?

That would make hitting the double bicep shot rather hard, now wouldn't it? }

And all their kids do book reports on MTV..

Cool

I always wanted a pair of those "Power" wrist weights.

I grooved on the idea that I'd be exercising my arms all day—and they were a weapon too...

They discontinued them long before I got old enough to have a job and buy some.

don't know much about Weider, my only frame of reference was in Arnold's book 'total recall, my unbelievable life'

is the guy that bad? Arnold made him sound like a top guy?
I know that things are often depicted in Rose tinted glasses.

He essentially created modern bodybuilding. He trained most of the top bodybuilders at he beginning of the steriod era and was the first to really talk about many of the intensification techniques we know about today such as drop sets and cheating. He was also a successful weightlifter who did develop a pretty impressive physique. I believe he also created the IFBB as well as FLEX and some other fitness/bodybuilding mags. For better or wors, he is often credited with developing what became the muscle mag stereotype we know of so well today.

Unfortunately he was also a bit of a shady character and did everything possible to take advantage of his name...like trying to sell self-defense courses when he never had anything to do with martial arts in the first place.

ok, yeah I agree, teaching martial arts when you don't train yourself is a shady & dangerous thing indeed.
