Default Organic Food Has More Antioxidants

An interesting article:
"Organic food really is better for your health than its conventional counterparts. At least, that's the conclusion of a new study conducted by researchers at Newcastle University and published this week. But not everyone is convinced."

Thanks for posting.

Here's the original paper:

http://research.ncl.ac.uk/nefg/QOF/d...%20BJN5552.pdf

This makes for interesting reading, as it contradicts most previous reviews/meta-analyses I've seen. It certainly challenges my view that organic food has no real differences from conventionally farmed food.

Whether these differences in anti-oxidant concentrations have the slightest effect on human health is, of course, a completely different question. What percentage difference of polyphenol intake is necessary to reduce say breast cancer? 5%? 20%? 500%? No one knows.

In fact, despite a multi-billion dollar marketing campaigns designed at convincing us that anti-oxidant consumption will make us healthier, actual concrete evidence is hard to come by. And the view that more antioxidants are always good is probably too simple - something I beat the drum about all the time on here.

As the authors of this study note:

Quote:
A recent review by Smith-Spangler
et al.(21)has analysed the results of fourteen studies in which the effects of organic and conventional food (both crop and livestock product) con-
sumption on clinical outcomes (e.g. allergic symptoms and Campylobacter
infections) and health markers (e.g. serum lipid and vitamin concentrations) were studied. However, they concluded that the currently available data do not allow clear trends with respect to health markers and outcomes to be identified. Therefore, there is an urgent need for well-controlled human intervention and/or cohort studies to identify/quantify potential human health impacts of organic v.conventional food consumption

True, a lot of unanswered questions. That is why I just said "interesting."

For me, and I reckon most of the average folks out there, is is the bang for the buck there? Are the benefits that much greater than the extra cost?

I heard awhile ago on the National News that too many anti-oxidants can be harmful. They also said that strawberries are always better to buy organic, because they are so tough to grow that farmers tend to use alot of chems on them, and that the fields have to be rotated every couple of years, etc.

The issue isn't as clear as most people think it is. I think the major reason why organic is superior is because GMO's can't legally be in organic foods. The secondary being the high toxin levels. Any amount of toxins that can be avoided is a good thing and we are bombarded daily through food, air, water, and electronics. It doesn't make sense for someone to become crazy and buy everything organic unless they have that disposable income in which case that would be a different story.

Exactly. People seem to forget that too many antioxidants in their diet can actually have pro-oxidative effects and even be carcinogenic
