Default Soaking your nuts

Never heard this before. Interesting, but haven't fact-checked any of this:

Quote:
Some benefits of soaking nuts:

Breaks down gluten
Phytic acid is reduced
Eases digestion
Tannins are removed
Vitamin absorption increases

I have also never heard of the practice, and I have done alot of research into nutrition , especially this last year.

Additionally, not sure what is meant by breaking down gluten, as nuts are naturally gluten free. With that said, nothing really breaks down gluten. Some of us just "tolerate" it, and more and more of us should not be eating it. Diagnosis of Celiac and Gluten intolerance are rising big time according to the Gastro Docs and internal medicine. (I know 3 gastro specialists - 1 of them in the family and one a family firend, and the other my specialist). Even my daughters' new boyfriend's mom was recently diagnosed with Celiac.

I do this with oats and cashew nuts. but not for the reasons stated above (but there a bonus!) and I hadn't heard of this before

I soak my oats over night, purely from a ease of digestive point of view.
don't eat oats as often as I used to but I do eat them blended into smoothies to add some decent calories that I can digest at ease.

Cashew nuts - we soak these over night if we are going to put them into a stir fry. easy to eat and taste nice fried this way.

I can actually eat oats, as they are gluten free naturally. However, companies like Quaker end up contaminating them in their facilities that also process wheat products. Additionally, oats can become contaminated even if they are grown close to wheat. So, I have to buy them specially and confirmed uncontaminated.

interesting, Gluten - some times depending on my stress levels I can tolerate, other times I cant at all. but usually only overly processed grains sit well.
the so called healthy whole grains mess me up.

I tend to keep gluten to a minimum anyway, but find it hard to cut it out completely as its really hard to meet friends or family for food.

Not meaning to hijack a thread about nuts, haha, but it would be prudent for you to get tested for celiac or intolerance, as celiac can mask its symptoms for even 30 years, all the while destroying your ability to absorb nutrients.

I hear ya, the dinner invites by friends dried up completely after I was diagnosed lol. Howeve, more and more restaurants are becoming gluten free friendly. Even at the buffet at the Aria Resort in Vegas, all buffet items are indicated as gluten free or not.

By the way, the most nutritious nut is walnut.

Yeah, I don't get this either, never heard of nuts containing any gluten whatsoever.

Although oats, unlike wheat, barley and rye, do not contain the same type of gluten that can be harmful for people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, not all steel-cut oats are safe for a gluten-free diet.

http://healthyeating.sfgate.com/stee...uten-1687.html

They do contain a form of gluten, that's where a lot of the confusion comes in (the link above isn't the best, it just states that they contain a different type of gluten but not the specific one they contain, the internet should assist if you want to research it further), many people don't realise that they do contain a form of gluten, albeit a different one, and strangely, there are a number of people that cannot eat oats but can tolerate wheat which is the opposite to celiacs...and most people aren't aware of that because it's even less well known about that the more normal wheat gluten issue.

I read about it quite a while back.

On top of which, as you say, there is the cross-contamination of the wheat gluten with the oat product as well. Some people have a problem with the one and not the other, whereas some people cannot tolerate either of the two types of gluten.

I've heared soaking your nuts in hot water can be used as a form of birth control for men. Oh wait.... nevermind....
