I think pull ups / chin ups are under rated tbh. Its one of those forgotten lifts. I know i need to do more of them.

I'm all about pull-ups for shoulder health and learning scapular retraction.

I also think they're great for generating some lat DOMS. That being said, I think for new(er) trainees, the chin up should be taught first. I see so many folks caving their chest and shoulders heavily on pull-ups whereas it's easier to keep the "chest-up" mentality with chin ups as well as easier to teach the "don't focus on pulling 'up' with your arms but rather forcing your elbows down"

Good form is underrated. I see a lot of cross-fitters swinging around like gibbons doing 15+ "pull-ups" in a set. They're still skinny though.

Plus, what're they going to do to add resistance? Good luck doing your gibbon-swing-pull-ups with a dipping belt on - you'll smash your kneecaps to bits...

Lets see what KK thinks..

Me, on the other hand.. I'm tall/skinny and suck at pull-ups but, after doing what I suck at I'm getting better at them.

I've seen a CrossFit vid which covered pull-ups in detail, it was a training session; they had 3 types of pull-ups, kipping, then a second one and finally a perfect pull-up with no swing, no body English, fully extended legs...in fact, it was probably better than a lot of people's form.

So, I think, confusing the different types they do for "pull-ups" is probably the issue here, since they have 3 distinct types they use for different purposes.

I think they're a great exercise.

Progression's more problematic than most, but it can be done.

I do mine weighted, I pick a weight that's pretty heavy for me, and work my way up to 5x5, and add a little more.

Worked for me for the last 6 months, I've gotten allot stronger with them doing it that way.

I wouldn't say they we're overrated in my opinion.

Same for me but I do 5x3 weighted 1/week and 4 or 5xAMAP 2x/week.

pullups are awesome. However, kipping is for those who only care about WOD numbers. Strict form is the way to go. Then again I may be biased, since military and special ops only count the best of strict form pullups on fitness tests.

KK does kipping pullups but he can pull 900+. That's the cutoff for legit kipping pullups IMO
