I think that stickum works well for catching footballs, It would slip like crazy with any kind of weight.

I use stuff called Pro-grip for helping my grip on handguns when my hands are sweaty. Its basically liquid chalk, comes in a pump bottle.

The stickum that you refer was an old mixture that football player used some time ago while playing to catch the ball under any kind of conditions. This other can is use in power lifting. I have a can and I use it before apply the chalk. Get me a good abrasive grip. SuperD has a video applying spray LOCKTITE to the bar...That may help too.
