Not to bash on the method as a whole, but when one of my friends wanted to start lifting and asked me about Starting Strength, I wouldn't even endorse it for him, a rank beginner.

Not saying the method is "bad", but constantly trying to up the weight on exercises I think breeds poor technique. If you have a coach or can be really honest with yourself, its okay, but trying to learn form and at the same time pile on weight does not a recipe for success make.

^^^^THis. This is the truth. I hurt myself pretty badly because I bought into the idea that I should be able to add X amount of weight to my squat over X amount of time and that I should be able to add weight to the bar 3 times a week, week in and week out.
Most beginners using SS aren't doing so with a coach to guide them, tell them when there form is shit, and tell them when to back off of the weight.

I am just being honest here, but I have never personally seen anyone squat 400+ using the Starting Strength method. My only point is that it's far (very far) from the norm at meets.

This is not to say people can't get strong using it; of course they can. But the folks who think it's the golden way need to understand there's an entire world out there of successful lifters who do it differently.

Furthermore, I can now tell which beginners are using Starting Strength because they typically have horrible form. They tend to hyperextend the lower back and thrust the hips back before they even begin to lift. It's not the program that's the problem, but rather the tendency to overthink the squat and turn it into a clunky, non-natural movement. Without coaching this is what occurs.

Obviously non-SS trainees have squat flaws too.
