Default Lyle Versus Layne

http://forums.lylemcdonald.com/showthread.php?t=22746

And, the actual conversation thread. When reviewing it be sure to look at it in its entirety before forming opinions/conclusions.

I know Lyle can be rather gruff and direct, and turn many off due to his attitude. However, personally, he has helped me many times (especially back a few years ago when I was having issues losing the last few pounds around the lower back/lower abdomen, and assisted with some diet manipulations), which now has allowed me to maintain and progress in certain areas of my goal wants/needs. His assistance, was priceless in many adaptions; I was able to turn off some of his attitude mentally, and just point to the information provided and determine whether it is quality or applicable. But, I realize, not everyone is able or willing to do that. Regardless, I respect Lyle and he does provide quality information, and is a smart when it comes to diet and training topics.

After reading, what do you guys think about this conversation?

Just posting for discussion.

have a great day guys!

Three things about Lyle:

1. He's one of the best at interpreting exercise and nutritional data and giving it to non-specialists in an understandable way, but without dumbing it down.

2. He can be absolutely obnoxious, and no one is safe from his ire if he disagrees with them.

3. He is not physically impressive (he trains for inline skating endurance events).

So for anyone who has difficulty divorcing (1) from (2) and (3), he is really difficult to read on message boards etc. He can appear like a small yappy dog picking fights with every one else around him.

The thing is, though, if you strip away all the ego and the trolling and the insults, he's usually right. His arguments are sound and based on research. The things he calls people out on - in his unpleasant way - are usually peddling some system that's deeply flawed.

I got tired and closed the tab after a few minutes. Frankly I am sick of watching grown men go through the "My dad is bigger than your dad" thing every time someone questions or challenges them. IMHO, they all are self declared "authorities." I read and or listen to both Lyle and Layne ( I have never really watched much of Blaha's stuff), use what I can and pffft the rest. I shut down when any argument/ debate turns to ad hominem attacks. You either know your subject or you don't, if you have to resort to calling names when challenged, you have bigger problems than a lack of knowledge.
