Default Be yourself, just be like me

So something I was thinking about today...

Why do we as a species try to shame others for enjoying their lives, when this manner of enjoyment is legal and not hurting others? On one hand we encourage folks to be themselves, but on the other we shame them when they find something they like to do that we don't agree with.

Its a matter of reality. If we can keep an open mind and accept what others find for real, we will all be much more relaxed. Often when someone finds something real that we disagree with, its easier to mock it than to view it from their angle even if we all have that ability.

I've never really thought about that in that perspective but it is alarming to think about.

but being yourself can also mean that you are ostracized from a group

Good question.

I think it's partly to do with belonging. We're social animals and we've evolved with strong affiliative instincts. How do we demonstrate that we are a loyal member of a group? One way is to share in our tribe's reaction to rival groups. In an earlier age we would have thrown rocks at them, but now snarky comments and a sense of superiority will do.

Take weightlifting vs crossfit. Lifting things up and down, done in slightly different ways. One tribe does it one way, one tribe does it another. We buy into one tribe, assimilate its values, and start looking down on the other one. Then we invent a load of reasons why our way is best.

Fitting in with the group, tribe, or pack is waaaaay overrated. I just do whatever. How it is looked upon, or whether it is approved, by the collective is not a concern. (Of course I'm not talking about doing things that are illegal). It works out much better that way. It creates a much smaller, almost non-existent, "group". This, in turn makes for much less drama, stress, and socially required responsibility. Most folks these days kinda rub me the wrong way anyway. (especially the ones who think you just have to "fit in". As long as my family unit (wife, kids, and myself) are happy, healthy, and safe, what someone else approves or disapproves of has NO effect on me.

I do joke along the lines that someone mentioned earlier, ala "friends don't let friends Bieber" or "friends don't let friends crossfit", but it is just that, joking. Heck, if it looks like they are having fun I'll probably Bieber right along with them. For the record, I have no idea what "Biebering" actually is. I just joke/pick with people. If I don't like you, I won't do this. But I, in no way, expect anyone to conform to my idea of "normal". That's just ridiculous.

As a society we have become way too sensitive and sissified. Do your own thing. if someone else disapproves, then they don't have to do it. Period.

That was kinda rambling, but I think I got the point across.

I agree with Syn, mankind haven't changed at all since the day we were created. And the difference's that can force you from the group don't have to
be major ones either. It can be something as simple and insignificant as your
music choice.

Speaking from personal experience, a preacher once told me I didn't belong
in his church because I liked Heavy Metal. Now I'm not mad at God or Christians, I believe in the Bible with all my heart, but you'll run into
assholes no-matter where you go.
