I get as much full ROM when doing calves as possible whether its a light weight day or heavy. I do vary them between sitting/standing/donkey as well and at times push off with a good majority of the weight on my great toe. then sink back down as slow and controlled as possible.

I know it's not weight training but I find whenever I do much much biking my calves get huge. The first thing I notice when I see high level bikers is the monster calves so I guess high volume low intensity works well for them.
