Default Define: Athlete

The Oxford Dictionary defines an athlete as such;

Quote:
athlete
Line breaks: ath|lete
Pronunciation: /ˈaθliːt

/
noun

1A person who is proficient in sports and other forms of physical exercise: he had the broad-shouldered build of a natural athlete

1.1British A person who takes part in competitive track and field events (athletics).
I'm curious as to how you would define an athlete, so please share your answers.

Two questions...

1. What is an Ahlete to you?
2. Are Bodybuilders athletes?

I would almost say it would more aptly apply to someone who does sports professionally, but I dunno.

Yes I think bodybuilders are athletes. Its hard freaking work.

Bodybuilders are not athletes.

As for a definition... I guess it's like porn stars: you know 'em when you see 'em, right?

edit: In all seriousness, I suppose an athlete would be someone who competes in a physically demanding sport or sport-like activity.

Athletics events seem to be restricted to the field events, such as running, walking, hurdles, discus etc, so I guess anyone within those sports would be considered an athlete, given that's where the term originates, to the best of my knowledge, whereas a gymnast is a gymnast and not an athlete and the same would hold true of a bodybuilder, where the definition is concerned.

I agree but disagree. I feel an athlete who treats life like a professional does but who is either at that level but on the cusp of it. Somebody who has dedicated an entire lifestyle to their sport. Difficult for me to explain my opinion

I agree on the definition of an athlete! And you certainly do know them haha!!

Its funny that those sports are considered as 'athletics' while others aren't. But that is more of a history thing.

I dont think bodybuilders are athletes, but I do. They are combination of athletes and artists. Its a mix of both of them, but I can't quite bring myself to say thwy are athletes, even though they are. They're artists who use their body as their canvas. They are so inspirational and I have the upmost respect for them, but I don't really look at them the same I do a sprinter, football player or basketball player. It's all athletes, but different sorts I guess.

I can't really explain it well, I just wondered people's perspective

I hope my post doesn't offend anybody, just curious!!

To me an athlete is anyone who seriously dedicates their life to their given sport. I would definitely say a bodybuilder is an athlete because of the sheer amount of hard work and effort that goes into becoming a bodybuilder. (when i say bodybuilder i dont mean the chest and bis crew who go for a pump session before going out on a bender)

I'd say to be an athlete the events in which you compete have to have some athletic aspect to it. By this definition bodybuilders aren't athlethes, but that doesn't mean they are therefore inferrior or anything. It's just semantics.

I'm not even sure if I'd consider powerlifters to be athletes. Strongmen however are athletes for sure in my opinion.

To me an athlete is someone that does a physical activity consistently. They are "athletic."

Bodybuilders are athletic, as are big powerlifters. They simply do something "athletic" that doesn't involve cardiovascular health etc.

this is a great topic for discussion. How can a golfer be an athlete but not a bodybuilder? Or a bowler and not a powerlifter. Mcnabb saying nascar drivers aren't athlete but being a driver is extremely demanding on the body. I think an athlete is one who is always challenging the limits of their mind and body for a said sport. A sport is something that requires constant demand from ones mind and body. I have had this discussion many times and it is really hard to flat out define what an athlete is (atleast it is for me). I guess it really boils down to ones point of view
