Monday 28.10.2013

I'm gonna start rating the sets with stars, 5 stars being great bar speed and 1 star being very hard but still completed. A "basic" challenging but not near failure session would be 3 stars. This way I can look back if I've done the same weight before but it has felt harder, then I've made progress.

Squat - 162.5 kg x 5 x 5 - ** - PR. Really exceeded myself again. Found The Groove (TM).
Bench - 77.5 kg x 8 x 3 - *****
Cheat Row (light) - 137.5 kg x 5 x 5 - ***

Shrug - 162.5 kg x 8 x 3 - ** - Make sure the straps are tight.
Chin-up - 3.75 kg x 5 x 3 - **** - Grip not a problem for a change! Note this may seem like a pussy weight to be using, but my bodyweight is close to 90 kg so it's good enough for me.
Good Mornings - 112.5 kg x 10 x 2 - ****
Crunch - 16.25 kg x 10 x 3 - *

Great workout. I opted to do 3 x 8 bench as the light workout. I'll progress on it separately from the 5 x 5 weight, but try not to go too hard so as not to hinder the heavy day's progress.

I've decided not to sweat the squat depth when I'm truly pushing my limits with the progression. As long as I'm not purposefully shallow, it will be fine. The most important thing is to break those mental and physical barriers, not nitpick over form.

Oh yeah, and my rotator cuffs/shoulders are finally feeling almost 100%!!! Thank God for foam rolling and stretching.

Thanks. What type of dog do you have? I'm thinking of getting a puppy now Does OHDL mean "overhead deadlift" by the way?

That is basically what I ended up doing. Instead of doing 5x5 with 90% of the heavy 5x5 (which would not be anywhere near failure), I chose to do 3x8 with that weight, which was still not close to failure but at least felt challenging

Good session. I really think you may be ready for Smolov Jr. 15kg increase on bench in 3 weeks, can't really argue with that program to be honest.

Wednesday 30.10.2013

Squat - 165 kg x 5 x 5 - ** - Deep PR. Surprised at how far I can push. Starting to like squats again.
Press - 56.25 kg x 8 x 3 - ***
Cheat Row - 157.5 kg x 5 x 5 - ** - PR

CGBP - 77.5 kg x 8 x 3 - *** - PR
BB Curl - 43.75 kg x 8 x 3 - *** - PR
BB Hold - 90 kg x 30 s x 3 - ***
Sit-up - 17.5 kg x 10 x 3 - **

This is how I normally psyche myself up for the squat:
Set 1: Come on, just try to do it. You did 5x5 last time with 2.5 kg less so surely you can do at least one set..?
Set 2: Okay, now I'm warmed up, the second set will be easier. Just try, it's okay to fail.
Set 3: Alright, after this I'm already past the half-way point! I think I may be able to do it..
Set 4: Just two sets to go, I ain't gonna quit now, otherwise I'll have to do it again next time! I summon the powers of Ancient Viking Gods to help me!
Set 5: Goddammit, I'm not about to fail on the last set no matter what! I'm Superman, nothing can stop me! Let's do this!

Then after that ordeal the rest of the workout is just fun and games.

Close grip bench improving nicely. I think it was a good idea to increase the upper body frequency a little (from 1.5x to 2x a week).

Easy stuff. 5 sets is too tough especially on bench. You could bench like 4x or 5x a week and mix up reps or something. Your squats are ridiculous.

Well that's kinda what I'm trying right now:

Mon - Bench 3x8
Wed - Close grip 3x8
Fri - Bench 5x5
Sat - Close grip 3x8

I'mma see how it works. Friday is the real test when it's the 5x5 day again. I'm sure it'll work though.
