Default Brute's ILSA Push Pull Strongman Write up

This is what we train for. This is what we live for. This is what WE do.

On August 3rd 2013, I competed in the ILSA Push Pull meet, a qualifier for Illinois' Strongest Man. I took first place in the 266+ class, securing a spot for the September 28th contest.

I couldn't have asked for a better day. The meet was at 3 PM, so I was able to sleep in, eat a good breakfast, drink plenty of water and drive up to the competition with several teammates. It was around 80 degrees outside with very little humidity, a nice breeze, just about perfect.

The events were rising bar, so the bar started "empty" and was called in 5 pound increments. If you wanted to lift a weight, you jumped in. 3 attempts, lift as much as you can. Total between overhead press and deadlift wins the meet.

I started with a 205 press, something I can hit most any day. It felt stupid light. Jumped in again at 230, a 5 pound PR. Felt like 135 on my shoulders in the rack position, popped up with no trouble. Jumped back in at 250. 25 pound PR. I have never felt this strong before. It was no issue locking it out, the bar moved as fast as it does at one plate.

I should also mention that our lightweight female took the state record by pressing 125, and one of our heavyweight females took it by pressing 150.

18" deadlifts are something I was born for. I warmed up to 515, and it popped up like an empty bar. I waited for 605 to be loaded, hit it no issue. 675 felt heavy but moved well. My final attempt was 715, but I only had about 2 minutes between the last attempt and this one as hardly anyone was left at this point. I broke the weight from the blocks, but was unable to lock it out. Still, a 60 pound PR for me, and good enough to win the event.

The 925 total took the SHW class, but didn't manage to break any records. On the upside, our HW female broke the state record with 415, and some of our men took records as well, notably the 730 deadlift from our 200 pounder.

Overall it was an outstanding meet for me. Our team took first in every weight class we entered, we broke records, and we're ready for more. I feel ready for the state championships. Time to win the big show.
