July 31st, 2013

Took the belt off today. It simply feels better squatting without one for me. Still taking things relatively easy.

Found out the issue with my sumos (I think). In the past they bothered my knees. I started sitting back more, and getting more upright, and had no knee issues. So, for me less hanging out over the bar did the trick.

Going to train light for a month or two until I feel recharged.

Squats
145 x 3
235 x 1
325 x 1
415 x 1
505 x 1

Sumo Deadlifts
185 x 1
275 x 1
365 x 1
455 x 1

Going to build up sumos slowly over time as I gain confidence.

Gotta love squats and pulls combo! Well done Steve! Sumo's have also bothered my knees of late, so I appreciate your thoughts in your post.

I've met competitive guys your age, weight class and strength who dead lift once per month and take weeks or more off after a competition...

You are hardier than you think!

Interesting, didn't know that Jim. Now I really wish we could work one on one to get this figured out.

I know it might seem like it is too early for me to focus on age 50 goals, but right now as I near 46, I more and more feel like I need a long term goal to get me through this weight loss.

My passion for powerlifting is still there, and high. Despite the lessons I learned this year, I am happy about the amazing progress I made, and hopeful about the future. I don't plan on slowing down.

Instead of focusing on a 2000 pound raw total, I am turning my focus to either maintaining, or gaining strength through my 50th birthday. This time will go by quickly and I have no intention of wasting it.

The last 3 years of my life have been my best training years, and if I can play smart and keep my body healthy, I believe I have a shot at several all time raw 50+ world records.

The following are current raw world records from PL Watch:

Class Total Lifter Country Fed Year

SHW 1,900 Thomas Dillard USA SPF 03/12/11
275 1,890 Mike Francis USA RAWU 2009
198 1,818 David Ricks RUPC 2010
308 1,653 Odd Haugen USA USAPL 2007
242 1,638 John Mitchell GB GBPF 05/01/10
220 1,636 Gary Grissinger USA USPA 01/19/13

165 1,565 Tony Conyers USA RUPC 2010
181 1,480 Bob Benedix USA RAWU 2010
148 1,466 Tony Conyers USA APF 04/29/11
132 925 Jim Marchio USA USAPL 2009
123 777 Derek Someda USA AAU 2007

I do not, under any circumstances, want to compete at 308 or SHW any longer. My weight loss journey has begun, I am down 13 pounds already, and headed towards 250 to 270. I think it is fair to say that if I am fortunate enough to compete over the age of 50, it will be in one of the bolded classes above.

220 would be an exceptionally low bodyweight for me, even if I cut to make weight. The 1890 total @ 275 is amazingly hefty for any age. It would be an honor to be within striking distance at the age of 50. I f I am in the ballpark you can bet I will make a run.

The total I really have my eye on is John Mitchell's 1638 total at 242. Because I need a specific goal to zero in on over the long haul, I am going to keep running this through my mind daily until circumstances change.

A lot of things can happen in 4 years. At the end of the day I am enjoying the chase, and will consider it a blessing if my body holds out that long.

Wish me luck and thanks for listening.
