Default The calorie...

This link is just for historical purposes about the term calorie, it's first use etc:

History of the Calorie in Nutrition

Interestingly, you have to wonder, with all the emphasis on calorie counting today, both by those that workout and those that don't, what would people have done had the calorie never been discovered and we weren't able to count everything in terms of a unit of energy.

I think back to when I was a kid and foods were never counted as calories, we just ate; no family member had a clue about what a calorie was, just balanced meals and we all turned out okay, even my brother who was into working out with chest expanders and such, as well as the rest of us that were into fitness.

We did just fine without counting but today there is so much overemphasis on it as if people can't get by without counting everything they eat in terms of calories...looking at it from both perspectives, it's really weird.

People seemed to know how much to eat without being given a number to adhere to and now they seem to have lost that insight with far too much reliance on numbers found on packets and/or pushed at them via health professionals.

or not even "how much to eat" but what to eat to get results. i remember watching a baseball game a few years back and a very old former player was a guest in the broadcast booth. diet somehow came up in the discussion, and the old guy said how players from his era would eat steak when they were trying to get bigger and stronger.

but like you said, they didn't need a nutrition label or a nutritionist to tell them this. i doubt very much they were anxious about getting enough protein. they just knew what foods helped give them results.

Reminds me of Rippetoe. Somebody asks what supplement to take and he asks how much milk they drink.

Unless you're serious about being a competitive bodybuilder, 90% of people worrying about calories and such are kids who just need to get over there fear of food.
