Default What is your best program?

I've been doing some research into my own logs and talking with jeremy about his strongman routine thoughts about different routines for diffrent lifts sparked something in me where I was wondering is there a best routine that you have found always worked for you? And what is it?

Fazc's 5x1@100%, 5x5@80% is easily the best pressing program I have ever done. Hands down. The bulk of my bench (and OHP) gains came from that program.

JB's BIG is easily the best squat program I have ever done. The bulk of my squat gains came from that program.

My deadlift sucks, so I need a program for that

Curious if a lot of you experienced folk have a go to routine or if you you mix and match routines based on what works best for a given lift in your experience.

Also wondering if all that is a trap in that you set your mind that bench "needs" volume or deadlifts "need" to be not done from the floor too much, etc.

ANother consideration is where you are on the lifting curve. I have gotten pretty lucky to have hit on the right routines at the right time when I needed them. When I needed form work, I got it. When I needed max mentality, I got it. But, point is a perfect routine for a dialed in intermediate is not going to be very useful for a rank beginer, so to say Wendler's is gospel (for example) is not really useful.

ANyway, curious about what some of you guys think is the bees knees. What is the best program for a lift and why.

Since I'm bored and no one else has answered yet:

BtB gave someone advice that for whatever reason has always stuck with me. When asking about the fastest way to increase the bench, wise old man gave a fast and straightforward answer. Smolov and eat 5000 calories per day.

Squatting fairly heavy twice a week is helping me. You mentioned deadlift, mine sucks. Carry on.

well my best program Is a A/B full body, I don't have the experience to say if it brings up a particular lift, but it has brought up all my main lifts and is the type of program I have been using since I started lifting nearly 2 years ago.

I doubt that is what your looking for mike but like ED I was bored so I thought I will type something.

I'm in no position at all to advise or suggest, or even opine here.

But I have met a fairly strong bencher at the local gym, who attested to the effectiveness of Smolov Jr., last time we talked about the bench press. He's by no means in the stratosphere like some guys on these forums, but is somewhere over the 3 wheels mark, at least.

So to me, he's pretty strong.

edit: And like Lee, in the post above, full body A/B (SS) did me a lot of good, and brought the majority of my (newbie!) squat and deadlift gains, such as they are, by far. Not bench so much, mind you...

This reminds me of that saying... The best program is the one you aren't doing

A long time ago brute force recommended 5 singles and then 3x3. It worked really well for me. I added 5 lb a week on to the singles for a couple months easy.

Never been able to stick to a program for more than 3 weeks, ever. Programming is of importance but it all comes down to hard work and dedication at the end. I do believe that alot of beginner lifters put to much attention to distractions like percentages, weak points, number of reps or sets etc. (If you bench 200 lbs, your weak point is your bench press, you dont need JM Presses to bring up your lagging triceps - just bench more! Or things like that

I had great gains on working a squat/push/pull kind of program. Also on a 3 or 4 split. Reps and sets have most always been played by how I feel at the moment, recently my deadlift have skyrocket from alternating a 4 week explosive / 2-3 weeks heavy kind of groove.

At the end of the day, everyone is different an Its up to you to learn how you should train and what works for you. Actually, this is the fun part of training - Trial and error!

I wrote a short blog post on this in February this year: How to Choose a Workout Routine

I think people should not focus on routines but on training as one's training must evolve over time.

These are golden words. It is okay to try something and fail at it and then try something different. It is OK.
