Peaking for a meet

Just a quick note on what I think worked well in my prep and what I need to improve upon.

- Being specific in my training. I focused early on in the cycle on raw strength and then as I got closer to the meet I did almost exclusively equipped work. This worked very well I think as I got the strength from the raw work to benefit more from the gear.
- Switching from double squat and bench sessions to a single lift focus. This is really a time constraint thing and couldn't be avoided but worked ok.
- Dropping assistance work down from 2 months out. I would like to improve my conditioning so I can keep more assistance in for longer.
- Working an overreaching phase for the last three weeks before the meet. This worked great for bench but I couldn't do reverse band work due to the rack being out of order at the gym. My squat was strongest around 6 weeks out and I think if I could have used reverse bands, that would have allowed me to maintain the same form and be stronger.
- Chains to allow me to deload in gear. This worked well. I used gear in every session for 6 weeks leading into the meet and was in great shape.

I will no doubt think of more things I did but this is just to allow me to refer back to this when peaking for my next meet.

Good stuff that you are able to analyze a meet after-wards just as well as you prepare for one beforehand. What does overreaching phase mean? Is that like overloading?

Yeah in my mind it's the same thing. I'm sure Tudor Bompa might disagree with my terminology but my idea is to smash my CNS with loads of supra-maximal weights so that when I rest the week before the meet, it catches up and makes me stronger.

I always like your philosophy Al because it is almost always bang on and proven to work. As always, I love to learn so much good stuff in here. Carry on!

Watch this space. My plans not to compete again until the autumn may be about to change

First though I'm back in the gym and for some ungodly reason I feel like trying to rep 100x20 on the bench.

More and more I am seeing this as the wisest move. Dropping them anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks out.

First session back

The mind was willing but the body was weak.

Stretching and deep heat applied to back.

Squats
Bar x lots x 2
60kgs x 10
80kgs x 10
Adductor hurt so added parallel box
100kgs x 10, 10
Felt awful. Sat down for 10 minutes.

Sled drags
40kgs x 20m there and back
60kgs x 20m there and back twice

FIN

Too early to be back in the gym really. More rest required. Adductor is not happy right now but have physio booked for Tuesday so will review from there. Have made contact with Ken Anderson and will be ordering briefs tomorrow along with a nice shiny lever belt. In the meantime I think raw squatting will be off a parallel box or higher and all heavy stuff will be in suit bottoms. Got a little bit ahead of myself tonight but hoping to have a better session on Sunday/Monday.

Making some enquiries right now which should see me stepping up to the next level. Will update more when I have confirmations.
