Default Breathing patterns

Is it best to inhale or exhale while you are contracting the muscle, or does it really matter? What will happen if you do it the opposite? Is your workout not as effective?

Exhale as you use force; Pushing the bar up in the bench press, standing up in the squat and deadlift, or pulling the bar towards you in a barbell row.

The breathing won't really make your workout less effective, BUT, you will perform the lift with more vigor if you breathe properly. So that alone can make your lifts more effective.

On heavy single rep benchpresses, I hold my breath throughout the lift. Metal Militia teaches to hold breath for up to 3 reps.

The funny thing about this is that the body generally instinctively knows what needs to be done; people lift heavy boxes/objects all the time but never take a moment to think about how they "must/should" breathe when doing so.
