If your stores are fairly close together, price comparing is the best way to go. That is where the favado app can be real helpful (saves you a bunch of time too). The best prices work both ways. Harris Teeter and Kroger are my two favorite groceries around here as they tend to carry a lot of variety. HT can be a bit pricey at times, but when they run a sale, they are usually great sales. When they run a sale and double the coupons up to $2 it is a real win. My problem here is that all the groceries and warehouse stores are spread apart. I have to plan trips a bit more, so teh bulk buys become the better way to go.
