Default Groceries

I am finding my grocery bill keeps climbing! It is me and my girlfriend, we eat pretty healthy.

Does anybody have any tips for grocery shopping?

Does anyone buy bulk meat? Often thought about that

Our groceries usually consist of meat, fruit, veggies, milk, eggs, and then a few random things. I always get my chicken on sale, it just seems much cheaper to eat a high carb, high crap diet.

That's why poor people are more obese. It's actually a statistical fact. Processed carbs are the cheapest food.

I don't worry too much about my grocery bill. It's pretty high, but I already compromise by getting normal grain fed meat. We pay around $150 a week for me, my wife, and our 2 year old daughter. She eats better than we do. All organic and natural.

I also go with the grain fed meat, with the amount of chicken and beef I consume there is no way I can get grass fed or organic.

I always take notice of people's carts and mine looks much different than the majority of people.

HA, I know right? I look like a health nut when my cart is next to someone else's. But that's the way it is. I was at a birthday party today when my buddy asked if I was going to splurge and have cake. They know I normally eat healthy. Funny thing is, I'm way bigger than any of those guys and I probably eat twice as many calories as they do any given day.

But that's the thing. When you eat as much food as we do, you actually have to pay more attention to what it is, because it'll mess you up if it's all crap.

I buy all my groceries at Costco, where everything including meat, is in bulk. For example, there chicken breasts w/back attached are sold in packs of 6 and each one is huge. Its enough to last 2 meals and 2 lunches. Pork roasts are dirt cheap and last for 3 meals and 4 lunches - and I am a big carnivore haha.

I find chicken wings and beef mince (aka ground beef) are always dirt cheap, and good choices when we want to save a bit of cash. Sometimes whole chickens likewise.

We try to save money here and there, to the extent that, even though we eat more food these days (well mostly, *I* do ), it seems that we don't actually spend any more on it. Mind you, that's not counting the supplement I buy (whey protein concentrate), but that's just for my use.

As others have said, Costco, Sams and Bj's are great places to buy in bulk. I prefer Bj's, now that my wife and I are empty nesters as the sizes are smaller and they are catering directly toward the family. At least here, their meat is better too.

Fresh or frozen veggies are cheap way to go.

A couple links to share and an app for your smart phone that is helpful.

app= favado - add your favorite shopping places and tell it what to watch for and it will track all the sales for those items. You want split breasts? Plug in your stores, tell it to watch for split breasts and boom! You will get notifications of all the sales on them.

Thanks guys great tips!

Bama-I downloaded that app it looks great.

I am a member at bjs, I usually try to do some price analysis and I find many times when meat is on sale at the grocery store it can be cheaper.

It is tough being healthy in this world

BJs is the closest bulk store to me and that is where I shop. I buy eggs, milk, protein powder, quinoa, bismati rice, etc. from there. Fresh fruit and veggies come from my local farm stand or the grocery store.

Glas Press and Seal is a great way, along with ZipLock freezer bags, to portion out the bulk meat into meal size prep portiions. Ex: Freezing steaks in sets of 2.
