Great thread with outstanding info. I wanted to add a few others:

* Pay attention to the weights used in the warm-up area compared to the lifting platform. A sanctioned meet will use the same weights. This is mega-important. If the weight feels heavy in the warm-up area, adjust your opener. Most commercial gyms are notorious for underweighted plates.

* If you normally train in the evening (like most of us do) get up a tad early and do some mobility / dynamic type stretching. Maybe a super light cardio session if possible. Get the blood moving.

* Eat what you normally eat for breakfast.

* Last, a lot of talk of hydration. I keep a 50/50 bottle of water / pedialyte.

ladylifter is off to a bad start
Default new to powerlifting

I want to start competing. Been training for almost a year. Trying to figure out what weight class I should stick to, I am currently 160 5'4''. Any tips and advice would be appreciated.

Good question. You should start right where you are. 165 class.

Find a meet and go. Nothing beats experience like experience. Let as many lifter there know its your first meet. You'll be surprised at how many folks will help. Great eclectic world of ours.

Default What is in your bag for the Day of the Meet

I am putting together a list for my kids, (5 kids from 13 - 17) as we prepare for our first meet. What do we need to make sure to bring with us besides a copy of the rules, socks and shoes?
