Default Advanced Strength Training Note

Just something I noted this week about my 5 week venture into periodization and rep work.

Reps helped build strength, but without frequent heavier training it seems my tendons and muscles did not like that strength. My squat was up 15 pounds since starting the rep work, but I picked up 4 intense strains (wrist, glute, knee and hammie).

During my 30 month venture into heavy frequent training I had absolutely zero strains.

My only conclusion is that for me, rep work has value, but something more like an undulating periodization might be more reasonable if I want to periodize and peak.

Good points btb!

I like the idea of using repwork on the main lift as assessory to the main lift. For example when you have done your heavy sets of 1-3 on the squat or bench, taje off weight and do 3x5 or 3x8. Works well!

undulating periodization?

I've probably seen it at work or in logs but haven't heard the term, that I recall, so can someone shed some light on this.

Do both. Periodize both sets of work. Have blocks of each type of work.

Latter is classic really; volume blocks followed an intensity block.

I find if my volume work is going well and I can hit something like a 5*5 pb then a following intensity phase us looking good.

Must be pointed out that I dont do rep work that often. Rarely over 6. Use volume on low reps to get the job done. If I have a phase of doing 10s I'll def do some heavyer daily max work in the mix

Good point steve, I have been contemplating undulating periodization for a while.

Chad smith talks about it in his juggernaut book
