You can't just walk into the gym and say eh I'll lift to 3 if i feel like it, maybe 4 the next set. Bullshit.
This is pretty close to the advice i give most people.

Also I pretty much always use the idea of a range of reps in a set. My form breaks down I stop, if not I squeeze out another.

I just got a full body pump from reading that. Will use as a reply to my friends asking silly questions.

Here's the translation...

Each week I get 50 questions from people looking for magic rep ranges, magic exercises, magic workouts, magic eating plans, magic advanced training techniques, ad nauseum.

The point I try to stress to each of them is this: the magic is progression, consistency (for years), reasonable exercise selection and proper food intake.

There are no magic workouts. There are no magic rep ranges. There are no magic PCF dieting ratios.

This is the opposite of absurdity. It is reality.

This is not to say people can do random crap. It's simply very important to detach them from the notion that they will eventually find some magical combination if they read every article on the Internet.

These magical workouts are forged in the gym, through time and training evolution.

This past week I was at a seminar for business start ups. A consultant, who is a friend, invited me and I went to support him in his business. The gist was. here is an easy plan to increase your business income in the next 90 days. Amazingly, at least to me, the others seemed slow in "getting it." I shared, " in my fitness ministry I have a saying I drill into everyone, 'work the plan and let the plan work.'" You would have thought I was Confucious.

As Steve, Brute, Jbyrd and others have said, that is how you get it done. There is a reason you do not see a 19 year old Mr. Olympia. If there was a magic pill, rep range or routine out there, Phil Heath (33) wouldn'nt be the front runner this week.

Stan Efferding just wrote an article more or less agreeing with everything you try to tell lifters.

http://npcnewsonline.com/powerbuildi...the-gym/63930/

Regarding singles, there is a time and place for them and I found out to my great cost that I did not choose the right time and place.
I believe the likes of Brute, Steve, J Byrd and others can do singles and make them an important part of their training because they have earned it through plenty of hard work in different rep ranges (and with consistency obviously). Just my opinion of course.
