Interesting opinion on bench arch for raw guys..
I'll have to try with a flatter back again, see if I'm stronger, I've been trying to arch as much as possible lately..

Yeah, same here mate. Might have to try just getting as tight as possible without arching much. Using that classic Tate method, of whoever's it was.

I have more flexibility and mobility than most people, it seems (especially my age, and gender), but maybe it's not always a good thing, if you let yourself "take advantage of it" too much...

alright, I have held off long enough.

What is it with all of the video's from the front seat of a car? Do they not have air conditioning in their houses?

My concern with too much arch is do you not risk injuring your back at some point? I have seen some videos recently of folks with arch that would put most contortionsist to shame, creating a 4-6" ROM. When I watch, I wonder if that weight is putting the unprotected back at risk? Maybe I am a purist, maybe I am a whimp, but I am not comfortable with a huge arch.

I like what Mark Bell has to say about benching in the video. I am a big guy (280ish) with a muscular back and have a hard time getting more than a couple inches of arch.

And it is Dave Tate who did the videos. It is called the "So you think you can bench" series. You can find them on youtube.

Mark covers the topic of the arch as best one can, but the general public seems to get lost many times in his messages.
There's many gray areas that apply in different scenarios.
We see some people that seem to have no spine doing an arch that creates a vision them snapping in two and think that's wrong which leads to arching is wrong.
Now you have the other end of the spectrum where lifters are trying to arch an have almost zero flexibility in there spinal column.
Why is it good to increase flexibility in other parts of your body but not your spine?
Another variable is different lever lengths. Some people have very long arms and a thin chests putting their shoulders in a very compromising position at the bottom of the bench press movement.
Weighing these factors together one can better filter what is beneficial and what might be higher risk.
