Dinner plate sizes have also increased, in the 1960s they used to be on average 9", now, they vary quite considerably.

Like I stated earlier, it doesn't matter how many portions a person has but if they don't know what a portion is supposed to look like, they can't really know how many portions they're eating; this is really more so for people that work on portions as opposed to calorie counting etc, as well as for those that may want an easier method of controlling or reducing their weight.
