Unless you're at his level and trying to beat him and be number one in the world, does it really matter?
I guess at the end of the day, we are out to improve our performance, regardless of the sport. Once you reach that next level, you tend to find out what it "takes" to remain competitive just by keeping your ears to the ground. For most sports, we as spectators will never know specifics of "what it takes."
All we can really do is apply common sense and reason.
