Morgan has been the editor of three tabloid newspapers in the UK.
In the UK, there has been a massive and protracted investigation into the behaviour of the press, culminating in the Leveson Inquiry. One of the things that set this off was reporters hacking into a cell-phone belonging to kidnapped 13 year old Millie Dowler. When journalists deleted some of her cell-phone messages, the family were misled into thinking she was still alive. This led to the closure of the News of the World newspaper and an intense scrutiny of News International, Rupert Murdoch's organisation (Murdoch created Fox News!) and Murdoch himsef
For years, the tactics of tabloid journalists have been truly vile, and the big questions have been 'how much did the editors know? How much did they sanction?
'In the inquiry, Morgan denied any knowledge of phone hacking on his watch. But the Leveson report said this:
Morgan's testimony under oath on phone hacking was "utterly unpersuasive. This was not, in any sense at all, a convincing answer" and "What it does, however, clearly prove is that he was aware that it was taking place in the press as a whole and that he was sufficiently unembarrassed by what was criminal behaviour that he was prepared to joke about it."
