They are certainly a confidence builder! In regards to overrated or underrated....for me they are underrated...I pull sumo in meets but I train all my rack pulls conventional, almost never sumo....I think for me they just help me be strong more than anything, i dot really focus them directly towards what my actual deadlift is. Speed pulls I have found work best for me as a sumo puller.

Oddly enough, I can't say I've ever tried them.

Thanks all for your insightful inputs, I don't do them that often so I'm experimenting with them from various heights. I agree that: they are confidence builders, may or may not have a carry over depends on individual, and are really great for building brute upper back strength which I believe is a great carry over for being stronger at the top end. I have done pulls from varying height below the knees, so doing these at knee-level actually surprised me as it too relatively quite a bit of weight before I felt that i was actually working.
Over the course of the next months ill be playing with different heights regardless of a meet or not. Silverback Barbell

I enjoy rack pulls, great way to overload and improve grip strength, i have had a knee replacement so deadlifting from the floor is very difficult for me, my hamstrings and legs very weak in comparison to my back, in general if i can get the bar off the floor i can usually lock out. Pb from floor is only 205kg, but from knee height i pulled 290kg with ease.

As Fazc saif, doing rack pulls from sticking point wont do much to get speed through them. A tip I got is to record alot of heavy deads and notice where the bar slows down (before sticking) and then pull from that height -1-5cm.
I think rack pulls are a good way to overload the lockout, but I have not noticed much carryover to the deadlift. If a deadlift sticks, its in most cases due to a bad pull from the floor, and halting deads have done a ton more for my deadlift than rack pulls! |

Going to do a little rack pull experiment this year and hoping it pays it off.
