I know this depends entirely on one's expenses and how he defines his quality of life, but if one did not have delusions of making tons of money doing so, is this a reasonable aspiration? How difficult would it be? In my mind, the gym would offer coaching, coordinate competitions, and facilitate training, of course.

I have a good friend who just opened one in upstate New York. They seem to be doing very well. It is a very powerlifting friendly gym. Bought most stuff used of great quality. Have a nice size space, and are priced well. You will have to figure out what your break even point would be and go from there. There is also a good article on Elitefts about owning a gym. i will see if i can dig it up.

If you have the capital to get it going you should do it. The initial investment will be quite large, but it could pay off in the long run. You probably wont be a millionaire, but for every planet fitness that opens up, a hardcore gym should open across the street.
