I sat watching the WSM 2011 and when they came to the deadlift which I think started at 340kg (feel free to correct that), I wondered if they did warm-up lifts due to the starting weight load being so high...and at that point the commentator just happened to mention that they warm-up prior to the event. So, my question is, what sort of a warm-up would that look like (percentage wise etc) and what kind of equipment do they have access to (would they have a barbell of exact dimensions, if they were expected to pull an axle in the deadlift etc) , and how far ahead of their turn would they have to finish their warm-ups? I figured that if it they had to warm-up and wait around, the warm-up would be pointless, necessary but they'd lose some of the benefits...so, I'm kinda curious, and it will help others that are considering Strongman events, as well. Thanks guys.

I've only seen a couple of strongman events in person. They had barbells off to the side for the guys to warm-up with. Mostly there was a light bar and a medium bar that the guys were using, I didn't see any weight changing going on.
But the event was a 550 lb deadlift for max reps. Nick Best was the guest judge at the competiton and he walked up cold to the 550 lb bar and kicked out a quick 15 reps like it was a warm-up. BEAST! They also had a couple of loaded barbells for the guys to use before the Press competition. I did see some plate changing on those. Then they started the Press competiton with a 220 lb log and moved up from there. For other events like Farmers and Yolk Walks they'd load it up and the guys would do a bunch of picks with the weight. |

I was at the WSM 2011 for the finals, during the warmups for log press max reps and max deadlift they just had a barbell with weights off to the side. Before the log press you could watch them c&p, same when deadlifting.

at WSM they have a warm up area. There isnt always one at local/regional shows. Sometimes that first event is really rough.

The competition I did didn't have much in the way of anything to warm up with. If you wanted to flip the tire around some that was fine, but everything else was locked up until just before it began.
