Edited the title spelling error Mike.
5 x 3 has been used for decades in different capacities. I'm not sure if Crossfit uses it but I know they didn't create it.

Its been used for a long long time, and not invented by CrossFit.
The guy who said it, was a CrossFit enthusiast, not a CrossFit athlete, if you get what I mean. Him and one of the trainers were discussing his routine, both of which didn't really know much about CrossFit or any sort of weight training that involved more than 1 joint. From what I can gather, the individual who said it probably trained a little at a CrossFit gym (or even looked on a CrossFit website) and saw some of the training they did. They do a lot of Oly movements, so they probably use 5x3 as part of their training, the frequency at which they use 5x3 I dont know. With the internet and all the misinformation and confusion, he was probably told by someone somewhere that 5x3 was invented by CrossFit. Most of the CrossFit stuff I have seen is the circuits with the Oly movements and a bunch of other things.
