Young athletes
What would you recommend for building strength and speed in young athletes?
I'm talking 10 to 12 years old Pee Wee football player with a willingness and desire to train. |
So far I've come up with:
Fat man pull-ups leading into Chin-ups Push-ups leading into Bar dips Sand bag loading Sled/Prowler Jumps (rope, box, broad) Hill sprints |
I was going to say burpees or squat jumps but I see you have jumps in there.
Push ups and/or diamond push ups. From the knees if need be to build strength. |
I like what you've got so far OR. My Pop's side of the family were farmers, and they all did heavy manual labor starting at age 5. Didn't stunt their growth any, all of them are well over 6 feet tall. Prepared them well for football and military service as well.
Some other things that might be fun to add in Hay Bale toss (or equivalent.) Farmers Carry Hand over Hand pulls (with sled) Agility drills |
Hardcore Squats and Deadlifts with regular beatings to improve morale.
Or... Definitely something overhead. With my little nephews the first thing they do when they see my 1kg plates or dumbbell handles is put them overhead. There's something quite primeval about that. I've got my little nephew (8 years old) doing Squats before. The only thing that is a concern with these little guys is that they have absolutely no fear. So he just crashes into the bottom position with no regard for his knees. I have to constantly slow him down. I'm hoping to train my son or daughter whenever they come along as early as 10-12 and I'm hoping to just teach them technique in a wide variety of Power and Olympic lifts. |
Look at what the Chinese are doing with their athletes at a young age, they're obviously doing something right.

I train my lil man (10yrs old) and we keep it pretty simple as far as training:
Push-ups Lots of core work Flipping tires (18-wheeler) sandbag or punching bag carry BW squats Lots of running nothing over compilcated! He loves it, I have a vid of him somewhere I'll post it when I find it! |
