this is quite the topic and I will add my two pennies, for me squatting should be a "natural" feel which I'm my opinion will change based on different variables. For me, when I was heavier a very wide stance suited best and I lft/compete RAW. I found it easier as I was able to transfer over to deads with the same stance. Now that I am bout 80lbs lighter, a more medium stance feels natural. I have hit my same numbers because I was able to find my natural feel for positioning.
Before a novice wonders into this thread and gets confused I want to reiterate what was already said and that being your stance should feel natural. Of course following the basic guidelines of a proper squat. I have tons of respect for Louie but I know when to agree to disagree.

I dont really know what constitutes 'wide' tbh. I squat with feet at about 4-6 inches outside of shoulder width. If that is wide then its weird as i have always though of myself as quad dominanet with weak posterior chain. If its not classed as wide then that makes sense.
I dont know whether this is of any relevance, but I definitely feel it more in myquads (even with a lighter weight) after squatting with a narrower stance than I do using the same weight (or even a bit heavier) with my normal squat stance. I have never used equipment (ocassionally a belt) so i dont know if this is relevant, just thought I would add my own experience to this. I dont think having legs out wide hit the quads as hard IMHO... Again i look at olympians and their quads are much bigger (in proportion) to pl'ers. Just my 2p worth Carl.
