I will have to dig for the citation, and will be happy to do so if pressed, but I believe I read in another article by the same author that while very important to overall health and performance, during prep for a specific PL meet, one should let the conditioning go as it WILL cut into your recovery and performance.

Off season = get uber conditioned.
Meet prep = do the bare minimum to stay in shape.
